Student Handbook for Title III Modular Studies
|
Title III - Strengthening Institutions Program Welcome to DCC's modular developmental instruction home page. Our primary goal is to support students in the achievement of their educational goals through instruction in foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Without these skills, the likelihood of success in college level courses is seriously diminished. With these skills, students will be able to master college course content, receive higher grades, be more likely to graduate from their program of study, and successfully transfer to a four year institution and/or enter the workplace. The skills addressed in our modular program are also essential for the educated citizen. Being able to read critically, write clearly, and understand quantitative information and problems allows an individual to become a more effective participant in the public arena and a participant who is better able to make informed judgments. Developmental education and the modular program at DCC thus make a substantial and positive contribution to the health of our communities and the strength of our democracy. Therefore, students are invited to perceive their engagement in developmental courses as an important and significant component of their college experience. The Title III Fundamental Skills Module program supports the direction expressed in the Developmental Studies Mission Statement by pursuing the following goals. Goal 1 - Increase the educational success rate of students requiring fundamental skills acquired through developmental studies coursework. Goal 2 - Create a modular curriculum for delivery of developmental studies course material. Goal 3 - Train instructors of developmental students in the best practices for teaching the adult learner. Goal 4 - Evaluate and document the effectiveness of the modular coursework in relationship to student academic achievement. It is our belief that many students who have difficulty succeeding in traditional developmental courses are able to achieve mastery of essential skills and knowledge in the modular structure which is the core of our Title III program. Further, by promoting student success at this level, we support the college mission of offering quality educational services to students.
