STUDENT GUIDE TO WEB-BASED COURSES

GENERAL INFORMATION

For those students who need a flexible schedule, Danville Community College offers web-based courses via the Internet.   Web-based courses are designed to be comparable to traditional classroom-based courses.  With few exceptions, the material covered in your distributed learning courses is exactly the same as the material covered in traditional courses. The primary difference between traditional courses and web-based courses centers on the degree of freedom and responsibility the student accepts when taking a web-based course.  For some people this aspect makes the web-based courses easier because it alleviates many time constraints and scheduling conflicts.

Textbooks and Assignments

Textbooks for your course may be purchased at the DCC Bookstore, by mail, or during the first week of classes from a DCC representative at your local community college.  In all cases, your instructor will inform you of the proper procedures for sending and receiving class assignments, textbooks, and other course materials.  Call the DCC Bookstore at (434) 797-8426 for information on textbook availability.

Contact with the Instructor

Distance learning students are encouraged to keep in close touch with their instructors either by telephone, e-mail, or on-campus visits.  Your instructor will provide you with information on how and how often to contact him or her.

Learning Resources

The Whittington W. Clement Learning Resources Center (LRC) invites you to use its many resources and services.  Library resources including the online card catalog, electronic reference books, and periodicals are available via the Internet on the LRC Resources page at:

                                                         http://www.dcc.vccs.edu/lrc/lrc/lrchome.htm

The LAC provides students with free peer tutoring, computer access, and testing services.  Audio-visual equipment is available in both the Library and the LAC.  For additional information call the Library at (434)797-8555 or the LAC at (434) 797-8404.

Student Services

DCC maintains a staff of professional counselors and faculty advisors who are committed to helping students with their academic, personal, career and vocational plans.  As a part of this assistance, students are provided appropriate tests, inventories, and occupational/educational information regarding financial assistance or employment.  For information call (434) 797-8460.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Web-based courses are great for highly motivated students who cannot come to campus because of their work schedules, family needs or other logistical problems. Distance learning students can control their own schedules by working with the course materials at their convenience.  As a student in this type of learning environment, you will find that you have to take more responsibility for your learning.  You must play an active role in the instruction and learning process.

Contact your instructor or the distance learning help desk immediately if problems or concerns arise.  Problems which could occur include:

  • cannot access web sites;
  • cannot read presentation material – material too small, background or text coloring does not show up, too much text, links do not work;
  • cannot access library resources (contact the library at (434) 797-8555)
  • unable to obtain textbook(s) or other materials.

 It is critical that students communicate questions and concerns related to course content, course procedures, access to learning resources, or technical problems to the instructor.

As with any learning experience, you will only get from it what you are willing to put into it.  We encourage you to be an active learner and to participate in the teaching and learning process.  Your primary contact for this course, as with any course, is your instructor.  Please let your faculty member know if you have any concerns about the course or problems related to the use of the technology. You may also contact the Distance Learning Help Desk in the TLTCenter for problems with the BlackBoard server or distance learning network.
