I.        Catalog Description: Provides students with a critical understanding of film through the discussion and viewing of motion pictures with emphasis upon the study of the forms and functions of film. Students will develop skills to analyze the shared social, cultural and historical influences of films and their contexts.


II.      Relationship of the course to curricula objectives in which it is taught: Students successfully completing this course will be able to examine and assess the different techniques a film embodies, the nature of topics considered within the film, whether overtly, covertly, or both. Students will be able to identify how directors manipulate scenes and dialogues to enhance characterization, plot, story lines, and artistry, in addition to how these elements lend themselves not only entertainment purposes, but toward higher reaching purposes that include, but are not limited to cultural ideas, accepted/challenged societal norms, political and hegemonic issues operating within society.

V.      Learner Outcomes:

The student will

A.      Identify basic film techniques incorporated within film production

B.      Identify elements and issues that make a film successful, despite poor ticket returns at the box office

C.      Understand the different elements that comprise horror

D.      Understand the different elements that comprise comedy genres

E.       Interpret, analyze, and understand social, cultural, political, and individual elements operating within particular films

F.       Recognize the effectiveness of characterization, dialogue, staging, and setting that contribute to film effectiveness, artistry, and success

G.     Experience exposure to foreign cultural films and the unique aesthetics they contribute to the film experience


VI.    Evaluation: Upon introduction and lecture on films, students will fill out detailed study guides that will lead and challenge their creative, analytical, and intellectual reasoning abilities through each film. Essays will be completed, as well as examinations covering specific topics as they relate to each course segment. Students are expected to complete written assignments that meet the conventions of Standard English.
