I. Catalog Description: Examines the literary and social aspects of science fiction, emphasizing development of ideas and techniques through the history of the genre. Involves critical reading and writing. Prerequisite ENG 112 or divisional approval.
II. Relationship of the Course to Curricula Objectives in which it is Taught: Students successfully completing this course will demonstrate the ability to read critically, write in an organized manner, listen objectively, locate and utilize information/resources, think critically, recognize the existence of different perspectives and culture values, and develop an historical consciousness.
III. Required Background: English 112 or departmental approval.
IV. Course Content:
Surveys major writers of Science Fiction.
Examples of authors and works covered may include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Early—Nathaniel Hawthorne, Jules Verne, H. G. Wells
2. Golden Age—Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Theodore Sturgeon
3. 1950s—Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Sheckly, Cordwainer Smith
4. New Wave—Harlan Ellison, Philip K. Dick, Samuel R. Delany, Ursula K. LeGuin
5. Cyberpunk—Pat Cadigan, William Gibson, Eileen Gunn
V. Learner Outcomes
The student will
A. Be able to respond critically and reflectively to literary works.
B. Be able to trace literary currents and movements
C. Be able to assess aesthetic qualities of literature
D. Be able to think and write critically about literacy works
E. Develop an appreciation for the works of significant Science Fiction authors
Students must write at least two major critical analysis papers. In addition, faculty may assess students using essays, and short answer tests, and/or other projects or assignments designed to assess mastery of course content.
All written assignments will be assessed for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and consistency according to the conventions of standard English.
