Assistive Technology

DCC strives to assist in the enhancement of student outcomes through provision of information, training, and technical support in the area of Assistive Technology.

There is an accessible computer workstation in the Learning Assistance Center section of the library. Students with disabilities are welcomed to use the computer workstation, which provides a number of special assistive technology programs to assist students. Please contact the Disabilities Services Office for more information.

The Aladdin Genie Pro CCTV: The Aladdin Genie Pro CCTV effectively opens the world of reading, writing, privacy, and independence for thousands of people with low vision. Its simplicity of use makes it easy and convenient to begin reading quickly. The Aladdin Genie Pro can be used as a stand-alone video magnification CCTV or with a personal computer monitor to create a color magnification system that best suits an individual’s needs. The split screen mode helps to create a workstation environment where an individual with low vision can simultaneously view both the material placed under the video magnifier and the information from the computer.

Copy Stands: Copy stands are available for use by students with mobility disabilities. Copy stands allow students to prop up their course materials for better viewing. They are specially designed for use with planners, large textbooks, reference manual or binder formats. Two adjustable clips hold pages securely in place. Nine height adjustments accommodate virtually any book size and viewing angle.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking: Dragon NaturallySpeaking offers student users powerful features to maximize their productivity. After completing training, you can talk to your computer and watch your words instantly in virtually any Windows® based application, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and Corel WordPerfect. With Dragon NaturallySpeaking a student can launch programs, create documents and reports, and manage your desktop all by voice. Dragon NaturallySpeaking represents a significant step forward in the accuracy, speed, and ease-of-use of speech recognition technology.

JAWS FOR WINDOWS: The most popular screen reader worldwide JAWS for Windows works with your PC to provide access to today’s software applications and the Internet. With its internal software speech synthesizer and the computer’s sound card, information from the screen is read aloud, providing technology to access a wide variety of information, education and job related applications. JAWS also outputs to refreshable Braille displays, providing unmatched Braille support of any screen reader on the market.

Kurzweil 1000: Kurzweil 1000 is an advanced Pentium PC-based reading tool that converts the printed word into speech for people who are blind or visually impaired. Developed by Ray Kurzweil, the creator of computerized reading technology, this highly responsive and flexible system offers a set of features including advanced document management and on-screen editing. Kurzweil 1000 combines accurate optical character recognition (OCR) and clear sounding synthetic speech in a sophisticated reading tool.

Laptop Computers: The Learning Resources Center has several laptop computers that may be checked out. Students are responsible for providing their own floppy disks and should not save documents on the computer. Students must check the laptop computer out from the LRC. Students are responsible for proper maintenance of the computer.

MAGic for Windows: MAGic combines great magnification features with true low vision screen reading. It gives you the ability to choose the information you want read from the screen as you navigate your applications

Tape Recorders: The Disability Services Office has several tape recorders that may be checked out for a limited time. Students are responsible for providing their own tapes and, if needed, batteries. Students must check the tape recorders out from the Disability Services Office.
