Travels:


Dr. Ramsey will meet with Dr. Rich Gross on Wednesday, November 4.

On November 10-11, Dr. Ramsey, accompanied by Ms. Carrie Ashe and Mr. Mark Thackston (College Board members), will travel to Richmond to attend the VCCS Annual State Board meeting.

On November 18-19, Dr. Ezell will attend the Academic and Student Affairs Council meeting in Richmond.

On November 19, Dr. Ramsey will attend the Board meeting of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research.

On November 20, Dr. Ezell will facilitate a table top exercise at Patrick Henry Community College dealing with Crisis Communication/Safety/Security

Angie McAdams attended the Gear-Up conference at the Hotel Roanoke (Nov 1 - Nov 2nd)


Janet Laughlin and Carolyn Byrd (PHCC) were the keynote speakers at the VADE (Virginia Association for Developmental Education) conference in Richmond, October 27-28.  They discussed the recommendations made by the Developmental Education Task Force, which have just been approved for implementation.  Officers for the state peer group are:  Laura Powell, president; Jim Sutherland, president-elect, and Gail Neal, political liaison.  Other DCC attendees were Christy Hatcher, Mary Motley, Gail Neal, Laura Powell, and Jim Sutherland.

Dee Drinkard and Sherry Gott  travelled to Williamsburg with three students for the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Institute Halloween weekend.

Gail Neal, Joan Tarpley-Robinson, and Jim Sutherland will attend the AMATYC Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 12-15, 2009.

Angie McAdams is serving as the interim Tech Prep Coordinator.

DCC Tech Prep and PHCC Tech Prep are hosting the National Career Pathways Certification Training Workshop at the Stratford Conference Center Nov. 11 - Nov. 12


On October 12, 2009, the Southern Piedmont Educational Opportunity Center at DCC sponsored a campus tour to Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University. EOC representatives, Teresa Sawyers, Sharon Harris, and Teressa Hairston, along with thirty-six high school seniors from Tunstall, Dan River, Chatham, George Washington, and Halifax participated in the tours. The students asked valuable questions in the information sessions and were given tours of the campuses.

 

On October, 22, 2009, the Southern Piedmont Educational Opportunity Center sponsored a campus tour to Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia State University. EOC representatives, Cathy Conner, Sharon Harris, and Teresa Sawyers, along with thirty-five high school seniors from Dan River, George Washington, and Halifax participated in the tours. They were given an information session and tour of the campus.

Dr. Lynn Dillon, adjunct faculty member, was elected President of the Virginia Association for Driver Education and Traffic Safety (VADETS)at the annual convention in October. See photo below:

Gifts and Remembrances

A sympathy card has been mailed Stacy Allocca, an adjunct instructor in the business division, whose mother died recently. 

 A donation has been made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Virginia Chapter in memory of Mr. Jack A. Mullins, father of Anna Parker.  Anna works in the Martinsville office of the Southern Piedmont Educational Opportunity Center.

A donation has been made to the Jack Hall Memorial Fund in memory of Mrs. Ruth Rakes Comer.  She is the wife of Mr. Marion Dale “Bud” Comer, who, before his retirement, was Professor of Automotive Technology.  He retired in  1992 with 42 years of service.

A sympathy card has been mailed to Mr. Roger Farr, whose mother-in-law, Sarah Hall, died at DRMH where she had been for six weeks.   Roger is an adjunct instructor for the Air Conditioning Department.
