March 12

Alliance for Excellence Luncheon with Ministers (by invitation only to area pastors).12 Noon - DIMON Carrington Conference Center (Bridge Street in Danville)  The purpose is to provide an annual update on Alliance For Excellence program and its projects. Alliance for Excellence is a partnership between DCC and African-American churches to promote higher education awareness in the minority community.

March 15

The re-dedication of the Wyatt Building on DCC's campus, with the Wyatt family and friends, at 3:30 p.m., Wyatt Building.

March 18 

Nurse's Capping Ceremony - 7 p.m., DCC's Oliver Hall. Practical Nursing candidates receive their caps. The capping ceremony symbolizes the personal and professional achievements of the students in the program.

March 19 

DCC's Annual Counselor's Seminar, with keynote speaker, Dr. Belle S. Wheelan, Virginia's Secretary of Education. The seminar begins at 9 a.m., with Wheelan's address scheduled for at 11 a.m. in the Capital Ballroom in the Ramada Inn-Stratford. The afternoon session includes a tour of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. The Counselor's Workshop brings together guidance counselors from all the public schools in Danville, Pittsylvania County, and Halifax County. The purpose is to update the counselors on new programs and services at DCC, as well as to discuss pertinent issues related to higher education and the workforce. 

As Secretary of Education, Dr. Wheelan provides the leadership and guiding vision for all public education in Virginia. She directs policy for education programs that involve multiple agencies; resolves any conflicts that may arise; directs the preparation of alternative education programs and budgets for the Governor; and oversees the program budget for cultural affairs within the education agencies. She is the former president of Northern Virginia Community College and Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg.

March 19 

Induction ceremony for Phi Theta Kappa, 7 p.m., Episcopal Church of the Epiphany (Main Street). 

March 23-24 

DCC Annual Career Fair March 23-24, featuring Chad Foster, a motivational speaker and author of “Teenagers Preparing for the Real World". See the activity schedule below. Foster will share his messages of success with students, parents and others in the community who live with or work with young people. The messages include (1) pursuit of dreams, (2) communication skills, (3) people skills, (4) early career preparation, (5) networking skills, (6) integrity, (7) making good choices and (8) community service. Foster is credited with developing and marketing the soft rubber playground used at McDonald’s restaurants around the world. He also is the host of his own television show, "Fly Fishing America", seen on the ESPN2 cable channel. 1:15 p.m. - Pittsylvania County High School juniors and seniors, Institute for Advanced Learning & Research

7 p.m.: Presentation for DCC and Averett University Students, parents and others in the community.

                               Thursday, March 24

                        10 a.m. - George Washington High School juniors and seniors

                        11 a.m. - Halifax County High School juniors and seniors

                        1 - 4 p.m. - Career Fair with more than 40  employers.

March 24:

Dr. Barbara Bolin, Virginia's Workforce Development Coordinator, visits Danville Community College. Bolin was named to this post in June 2003 by Governor Mark Warner. As the Commonwealth's first coordinator of workforce development, she is responsible for coordinating the workforce services that are currently spread across 22 programs, within 10 state agencies. Dr. Bolin will tour the campus and visit the Career Fair in the afternoon.

18th Annual Alliance For Excellence Academic Awards Program, May 13, 7:00 p.m., Cherrystone Baptist Association Center, Ringgold. Minority honor graduates from George Washington, Chatham, Dan River, Gretna, Tunstall, and Halifax County High Schools. For more information, contact Paula Coleman, or call 434.797.8516.

 

DCC Graduation, May 14, 7:00 p.m., Athletic Field in front of the Hill Building (on Kemper Road). More than 300 graduates will receive associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates in more than 30 fields of study.
