DCC Sets 27th Annual Celebration of the Arts

DANVILLE, VA, March 20, 2009 — Music, poetry, art,
photography, literature, and even aesthetic surgery will be the focus of
Danville Community College’s 27th Annual Celebration of the Arts, March 31 –
April 2.
“We have an exciting line up this year,” says Dr. Mark Wallace,
Assistant Professor of History and Chair of the Celebration of the Arts
Committee. “We invite the community to come join us for these events.”
The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, March 31, 2009:
Poetry as a Source of Inspiration and Motivation,
presented Lisa Zaran, an American writer of Norwegian ancestry,
who is the author of six poetry collections. Zaran writes compelling letters to
famous artists like Bob Dylan, as well as heartfelt and endearing descriptions
of her talks with the father she lost in 1996. Here first poem, “Hallway” was
written when she was just six years old. Since then her books include:
the sometimes girl (2004), You Have A Lovely Heart,
(2004), Clipped From Our Days (2005), The Blondes Lay
Content (2006) and Subtraction Flower (2006). Zaran
continues to write as well as speak at poetry festivals. She also founded a
poetry journal, Contemporary American Voices, whose goal is to encourage and
carry out through publishing the art of poetry. Her intimate poems are well-
liked among people of all ages.

George Washington High School Choir in concert.
Conducted by Lee Anne Sheridan, Conductor, the George
Washington High School Choir will delight the audience with some of their best
loved songs. An accomplished group, the 23-member choir performs before their
peers and selected members have represented the school at the All District Choir
in Salem, and at the Jefferson Forest Choir Festival. The performing members
are: Taylor Talley, Tonesha Childress, Ryan McGhee,
Kyndal Worsham, Ashley Davis, Rashay Gilbert,
Tasha Lathrop, and Jesikah Moser, Johnathan Amos and
Kirie Graham, Micki Petty, Brandy Eldridge, Jhalissa
Harris, Shabria Pettus, Marie George, Kelsey Davis,
Thiera Ellison, Shakeyva Jones, and Sabre Walton.

Tidewater Guitar Ensemble in concert.
Founded in 1996 by Sam Dorsey, the Tidewater Guitar Ensemble is one of the only
guitar orchestras of its kind in the United States. The orchestra is an ensemble
of more than a dozen accomplished guitarists who use the lush timbral resources
of an orchestra of different sizes to explore a rich repertoire that ranges from
Bach to Bartok and traditional Central and South American music. The orchestra
includes traditional classical guitars, supplemented by soprano guitars and bass
guitars. They have performed throughout the state as part of the Virginia Arts
Festival and represented the U.S. at the International Guitar Festival in Costa
Rica in 1999.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009:
The Art of Aesthetic Surgery, by
Kel Cohen, M.D. Dr. Cohen will share his reflections on how
plastic surgery can be seen as an art form. He believes that aesthetic
alteration changes mind and spirit. The removal of physical deformity changes
not only the individual’s presentation to others, but supports a sense of inner
peace and self-acceptance. He has devoted his 30+ years in his clinical and
surgical career to research on how wounds heal. As the founder and first
Chairman of Plastic Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, he
directed the first clinical wound healing center in the United States. He has
authored more than 100 scientific articles, texts, papers and journals about
wound healing. Dr. Cohen was a founder of the Wound Healing Society and Wound
Healing Foundation and has spoken around the world on his research and the
clinical management of wounds. He is the recipient of numerous awards including
the lifetime achievement awards from both the Wound Healing Society and the
Society for the Advancement of Wound Care (SAWC) for his research and clinical
work in the wound healing field. Dr Cohen's interest in plastic surgery was
sparked by his own facial deformity as a child which was corrected by a plastic
surgeon.

Los Gatos in concert. Roanoke
musicians Francisco Aranda, Vladimir Espinoza,
Jeff Hofmann, Chris Magee, Leny Marcus,
and David San are Los Gatos. The band presents a musical
program that includes traditional Latin music and Jazz Latin music including
salsa, merengue, and calypso – which carry the fusion of styles and influences
from Spain, Africa, and New Orleans. The group believes that the confluence of
numerous musical styles symbolizes the harmonious blending of genre and the
individual.

Thursday, April 2, 2009:
Writing and Arts Competition. The
Celebration of the Arts will announce the winners of the 2009 Poetry, Short
Story, Painting and Photography contests.
