FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Staff Contact: Administrative Assistant to the President for Public Relations & Minority Concerns MAX GLASS NAMED TOP VCCS WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONAL FOR 2003
DANVILLE,
VA, March 3, 2003 -- Dr.
Max R. Glass, Dean of
Workforce Services at Danville Community College, has been named the 2003 Virginia Community College System’s Workforce Development
Professional of the Year.
Glass, who has been employed at DCC since 1969, recently traveled to
Richmond where he was honored by VCCS Chancellor Dr.
Glenn DuBois,
and the State Board for Community Colleges. Glass is the second
recipient of the prestigious honor that was established in 2002 to
recognize the efforts of community college workforce development
personnel.
Glass
has had a distinguished career in workforce services and continuing
education at DCC, spanning more than three decades. In addition, he has
served as Interim Dean of Instruction and Student Development on two
separate occasions. He holds his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree,
and doctorate all from Virginia Tech. As
Dean of Workforce Services, Glass is responsible for five major program
areas, including the Center for Business, Industry and Government (C-BIG);
Regional Center for Applied Technology and Training (RCATT);
Apprenticeship Training; Continuing Education and off-campus centers;
and the DCC Workforce Investment Act One-Stop Center. He supervises 23
full and part-time administrative employees and 50-60 adjunct
instructors.
Glass
was cited for his efforts in promoting the goals of the VCCS business
and industry services at the state and local levels. It was noted that
he and his staff were instrumental in working with local economic
developers in bringing Essel Propack to Danville and in establishing an
industrial maintenance-training program for Goodyear Tire and Rubber
Company employees. The Goodyear training program in Danville has been
lauded as a model for use at other plants. In addition, it was through
Glass’s leadership that a Fire Science program was brought to DCC.
Three groups have completed this program and 55 are currently enrolled
in an Associate Degree in Technical Studies - Fire Science. Other
accomplishments include developing a credit course evening program for
on and off-campus, and establishing a non-credit program to serve adults
and youth of all ages. Also, the Continuing Education programs at DCC
have been recognized four times by the Virginia Department of Education
as being exemplary. DCC
President Carlyle
Ramsey said the award is an
honor to both Glass and DCC. “Dr. Glass is always interested in serving the needs of our service area,” Ramsey said. “He has managed to find balance by leveraging partnerships when needed to meet the needs of our business, industry, and government partners. I congratulate Max and his service to DCC and the community.” Prior to coming to DCC, Glass was a tenured faculty member at Virginia Tech. He has also served as an adjunct instructor at Averett University teaching upper-level management courses. He is active in his church and community and served as an artillery officer in the United States Army.
