BUILDING TO
BE
RE-DEDICATED
DANVILLE, VA, March 11, 2004
-- Danville Community College’s Landon R. Wyatt Building will be
formally re-dedicated on Monday, March 15, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The
ceremony will include remarks by local and state governmental and
educational leaders, as well as the family of former Senator Landon
Wyatt, Sr., for whom the building was named.
Participating on the
program include DCC President Dr. Carlyle Ramsey; DCC Board Chair Mattie
Cowan; DCC Educational Foundation Board President Shirley Priminano;
Danville Mayor John Hamlin; Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors
Chair Coy Harville, and Halifax County Board of Supervisors Chair
William I. Fitzgerald. Following the ceremony, there will be a reception
and tours of the building.
Plans for the Wyatt
Building began in the spring of 1948 as a location for the Danville
branch of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the assistance of
then-Delegate Landon R. Wyatt Sr., who was a member of the House
Appropriations Committee, funds were obtained to construct the building
in 1949-50. Later as Senator, Wyatt was instrumental in obtaining
additional funds for the expansion of the facility. The building was
formally designated the Landon R. Wyatt Building on June 28, 1971 in
recognition of his commitment to academic excellence in the development
of Danville Community College. Wyatt served as a member of Danville City Council from 1934 - 1944; a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, from 1944-1954; and the Virginia Senate, from 1954-1967.
