VERA MURPHY/LANGSTON HIGH REUNION

COMMITTEE SCHOLARSHIP SET AT DCC

The Vera B. Murphy Memorial /John M. DANVILLE, VA., August 25, 2003 -- A scholarship in memory of a former Danville principal and educator, Vera B. Murphy, has been established at Danville Community College. The Vera B. Murphy Memorial/John M. Langston High School Reunion Committee Scholarship is a $15,000 endowed award to the DCC Educational Foundation.  

This new scholarship honors the memory of Vera B. Murphy, who served as principal of John M. Langston High School for 10 years, and later as principal of John M. Langston Junior High School for two years. Murphy retired in 1972 after more than 43 years as a teacher, guidance counselor, and principal in school systems in North Carolina, Pittsylvania County and Danville. The award was made possible by alumni of the former high school, named in memory of John M. Langston, an educator and Congressional representative from Virginia.

The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in 2004-2005 academic year.  To be eligible, the recipient must (1) be a graduating high school senior who will enroll full-time at DCC; (2) have maintained a 2.5 or better grade point average; and (3) reside in the college’s service region of Danville, Pittsylvania County or Halifax County.
