DCC STUDENTS ATTEND STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
DANVILLE, VA, December 5, 2003 -- Three Danville Community College students - Terrie Crumpton of Chatham, Kaye Moyer of Danville, and Kim Pool of South Boston were showcased at the Student Leadership Conference, held recently in Fairfax. They were selected for their outstanding academic and leadership achievements. The Annual Student Leadership Conference provides an opportunity for community college students to meet others and to participate in workshops on various topics, including financial aid, leadership styles, publicity, and planning and organizing clubs. The theme was “Building Leadership -- One Block at a Time.” Virginia’s Secretary of Education, Dr. Belle Wheelan, was the keynote speaker. Crumpton, who is majoring in electrical/electronics, serves as president of the National Vocational Technical Honor Society. She credits the Trade Readjustment Act program with helping her to attend college after working at E.M. Solutions as a press brake. With the NVTHS, Crumpton has participated in many fund raising activities, including a car show to fund future service projects and last year’s Christmas project, which provided items needed by the local animal shelter. In addition, she served as co-hostess for a reunion last spring of approximately 250 former electrical-electronic graduates. Crumpton, married and a mother of three, enjoys gardening and gourmet cooking in her spare time. Moyer is enrolled in the Administrative Support Technology program - Medical Office Specialization. A 1976 graduate of Tunstall High School, Moyer came to DCC after working for several years at VF Corporation. Since enrolling at DCC, Moyer has been involved in a variety of student activities, including serving as president of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Moyer, who also participated in the PEW Leadership program, is a member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals, National Vocational-Technical Honor Society, and CEO Club. She also serves as a tutor and representative to the Student Government Association. Pool is enrolled in the Accounting and Information Systems Technology programs, and has been involved in several programs since attending DCC. Last year, she was involved in the Enterprising Student Program and was awarded a scholarship and first place honors for the Best Business Plan. She also participated in the PEW Leadership Program. Pool serves as secretary of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and as Secretary of the CEO Club. Pool plans to receive her associate degrees in May 2004. She is the mother of a six-year-old daughter.
