DANVILLE, VA, February 8, 2005 – Danville Community College and community leaders issued a call to action today as they kicked off the Tsunami Relief Project sponsored by DCC, the Danville Fire Department and area volunteer fire departments.

DCC President Dr. Carlyle Ramsey was joined on campus by Danville Vice Mayor Wayne Williams, Danville Fire Chief B.G Lewis III, student club leaders, representatives from area fire stations, and many others issuing the call to action, urging residents to give generously to the project. Proceeds from the project will benefit Save The Children.

“Our initial goal is to explain the project to the public and ask the community to help us in our efforts,” said Ramsey. “This is a college-wide initiative that students, faculty and staff all have a hand in, and our goal is to elicit the highest level of generosity from the community. DCC feels strongly about showing support on an international level.”

This call to action will be followed by a fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., as firefighters and volunteers from 11 DCC student clubs and organizations collect donations for the relief effort at six locations throughout the City of Danville.

“We feel fortunate to be able to work with the firefighters. Both groups—the students and the firefighters—are giving time and energy to see that DCC and Danville and the community are distinct parts of the relief effort,” Ramsey said.

Fundraiser locations in the Danville area will include:

  • Lowe’s, 280 Lowe’s Drive (across from Piedmont Mall)

  • Belk (main store), Piedmont Mall

  • Belk (men’s store), Piedmont Mall

  • Sheetz, 3425 Riverside Drive

  • Value City, 2855 Riverside Drive

  • K-mart, 3311 Riverside Drive
