STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - September  2003

Joseph Merricks, Jr. 

               Joseph Merricks, Jr. of Dry Fork is a second-year student. He has a double major - Computer-Aided Drafting and Design and General Engineering Technology,  and will complete his studies in summer 2004. After graduation, he plans to transfer to Old Dominion University and ultimately plans a career designing sailboats and yachts.

            Merricks, who is the son of Joseph Merricks, Sr. and Mary Katherine Washington, is a graduate of the Wurzberg High School in Wurzberg, Germany. He is president of the Student Government Association, and serves as Webmaster of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. 

            Merricks says any curriculum at DCC would be a great first step toward a successful career and he encourages others to attend DCC.

            “At first, I chose the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program.  Then, I heard about the great drafting and engineering programs and decided to change curriculums,” Merricks says. “I think DCC is quickly becoming the technology leader among America’s community colleges.”
