FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Staff Contact: Director of Public Relations & Minority Concerns DCC'S PTK CHAPTER RECOGNIZED FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
DANVILLE,
VA, August 19, 2003 -- Danville Community College’s Upsilon Phi
Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was recently recognized for participating in
“Project Graduation, Feed a Body, Feed a Mind.” The program,
based on a community service initiative of the international honor
society for two-year college students, provides community colleges with
an avenue to fight against hunger and illiteracy. The DCC chapter
spearheaded a drive to collect donated books during the 2003
commencement. DCC’s
Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa collected more than 200 books for the
project. The books were distributed to local organizations,
including the Carrington Child Development Center, Headstart, DOVES, the
Homeless Shelter, and kindergarten classrooms throughout the Danville
area. During the Spring Semester, the DCC Chapter also conducted a
food drive, with the canned goods taken to the Homeless Shelter. Overall,
Project Graduation collected 48,015 canned food items and 30,484 books
from community colleges throughout the nation. PTK officials
acknowledged the program’s success was a result of the support
provided at the community college level. For
