DCC’s PHI THETA KAPPA CHAPTER

HOSTS VISITS TO HISTORICAL SITES

DANVILLE, VA, April 21, 2005 – The Upsilon Phi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) at Danville Community College will serve as host to other PTK chapters from Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina as they tour local historical sites. The tour is planned for Saturday, April 23, and will include visits to the site of the Wreck of the Old ’97, the site of the Last Capitol of the Confederacy (Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History) and the Langhorne House.

The field trip is a result of the group’s international honors topic, “Pop Culture” and the study of James Dean Died Here: The Locations of America’s Pop Culture Landmarks, a book by Chris Epting that provides commentary and directions to hundreds of places where memorable events occurred in American history.

“The pop culture right here near Danville is a great resource for our topic of study and provides an opportunity to bring together several PTK chapters and a significant number of students,” said Vickie Taylor, Assistant Professor of Sociology and a chapter advisor. “We wanted to open the opportunity to as many students as possible and share what Danville has to offer.”

The group tour, which begins at 1:00 p.m. at the site of the Wreck of the Old ’97, will be led by local historian, Lawrence McFall. For more information, contact Vickie Taylor at (434) 797-8452, or toll free at 800-560-4291, ext. 8452.
