RECOGNIZED AT ANNUAL MEETING

 

            DANVILLE, VA., April 3, 2003 -- The Upsilon Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society at Danville Community College has been recognized as the “Most Distinguished Chapter” in the region.  The local group received honors for its memory book, newsletter and fundraising efforts.  In addition, the chapter also was named an “International Five-Star Chapter”.  The awards were announced at the 2003 annual convention held recently in Portsmouth, VA.

            Honors received at the meeting included:

  • Memory book, created by DCC student Tiffani Hogg of Nathalie, received first place honors.  The book received a score of 96 out of a possible 100. 

  • Canned Food Collection Drive - Tie for first place honors among chapters.

  • Newsletter - Second place honors

  • Fundraising Efforts - Third place award

  • Hallmark awards in scholarship (first place), service (second place), and leadership (fourth place).

  • Recognition for their Wealth of Health and Book Drive.

  • Steven Morris of Danville, the chapter president, and Jennifer Saunders of Dry Fork, were also inducted into the Regional Hall of Honor. 

  • The Chapter’s Cancer Quilt, designed to help with the International Service Project: “Conquering Cancer”, was also displayed at the convention. 

  • All total, the chapter received $485 in award monies.

            Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges, with more than 1,200 chapters at community, technical and junior colleges in all 50 states, Canada, Germany, Japan, and U.S. territories.  Chapter advisors are: Vickie Holland Taylor, Assistant Professor of Sociology, and Charlie W. Adams II, Professor of Information Systems Technology.
