FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Staff Contact: Director of Public Relations & Minority Concerns DCC SETS “LIVING LEGENDS” CONCERT SERIES THIS FALL
DANVILLE, VA Sept.13, 2005 - A variety of musical entertainment including blues, contemporary, folk, jazz, swing-ragtime, gypsy-swing and blues highlight the “Living Legends Fall Concert Series” at Danville Community College. The series features free concerts open to the public during the day and evening in September, October and November. All performances will be held on the DCC campus in Oliver Hall. The Carolina Roustabouts, with their mixture of country and blue grass rhythms, kicks off the series on Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. The band features Dr. Don Wright, a dentist from Eden, NC on banjo; George Underwood, an octogenarian on guitar; Andy Martin, former amateur boxer, actor, and virtuoso fiddle player; and Tommy Waynes, pastor of a Reidsville, NC Baptist church, on the bass. In addition, fiddler Andy Martin will conduct an Old-Time Fiddle Workshop immediately following the group’s performance. Later, that evening Rift, a contemporary “grunge-grass” band, will perform at 7 p.m. The band features Dr. Don Wright on banjo; as well as mandolinist Tony Williamson and his son, vocalist Hardy Williamson; and Robbie Link on bass. “Grunge-grass” is a blend of jazz, folk and bluegrass. Rift offers a traditional American-style music that bridges the generation gap. Their album titled, “Push on Thru”, combines acoustic rock, ballad, bluegrass and alternative country styles. October’s performances bring a mixture of folk and blues music to the stage. John Dee Holeman, an award-winning performer and master blues guitarist and dancer will perform Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. Holeman of Durham, NC, provides a rhythmic performance featuring his own touch of jazz and rhythm & blues. He has performed throughout the nation, Europe and Asia. Following the performance, guitarist Michael “Diamond” Thompson will conduct a Ragtime Guitar Workshop. Mike “Lightnin” Wells is another featured artist to perform at 7 p.m., on October 13. His performance features an array of folk blues classics, produced by string instruments such as the guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele and harmonica. Wells relates his 20 years of experience and research into an educational performance that can be enjoyed by all ages. November’s performances include the Piedmont Jazzniks which offers a musical performance of jazz, swing and ragtime music on November 10, at 11 a.m. The trio consists of Michael Thompson on guitar, Mike Willis, vibraphone, and Bob Hedrick on bass. Members of the trio have toured and recorded internationally. The Piedmont Jazzniks relate to audiences of all ages. The 7 p.m. evening performance by The Hot Club of N.C. features Rex Griffin, guitarist; John Pasquini, violinist; Pat Lawrence, contrabass; and Lauren Oliver, rhythm guitar. The band offers a mix of gypsy-swing. Following the concert, Rex Griffin will conduct a Gypsy Guitar Workshop.
