FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Staff Contact: Director of Public Relations & Minority Concerns DCC TO OFFER GRANT WRITING CLASS FOR NON-PROFITS
DANVILLE, VA, Dec. 17, 2004 – Local non-profit organizations seeking grant funds can now get assistance in preparing funding applications. During the Spring Semester, Danville Community College will offer a grant writing class. Entitled, Grant Writing for Non-Profits (BUS 195-50), the one-credit class will meet on Monday evenings, 6-9 p.m., Jan. 24 – Feb. 14, in EIT Building, Room 18. Jennifer Smith, Director of Prevention and Quality Assurance for Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services, will be the instructor. “One of my biggest goals for this class is to give people the confidence to write a grant proposal,” Smith says. “So often the enthusiasm for a grant writing project is there and the grant writer has all the information and wants to put it on paper, but they lack the confidence to follow through. “The possibility of rejection is powerful, but I’m hoping through practice and feedback, students will feel more confident about succeeding in their grant writing goals,” Smith added. The class discussion will focus on proposal writing, including step-by-step instructions using an easily adaptable grant format. Students also will practice writing sections of grant proposals, such as the Summary, Problem Statement, Objectives, Evaluation Plan and Sustainability Statement. In addition, the class will cover how to locate sources of grant opportunities. Smith says students are encouraged to bring to class either a proposal in progress or one recently completed.
