DANVILLE,
VA, December 19, 2002 -- A scholarship in memory of Danville Community
College’s long-time history professor, Fred A. Lloyd, is being
established at DCC by his widow, Jean F. Lloyd, and children, Lori
and Lamont Lloyd. The
Fred Lloyd III Memorial Scholarship recognizes the popular history professor who died on August 23, 2002.
Lloyd joined the college faculty in September 1971 and was involved in a
number of campus committees. He also was a co-founder and faculty
advisor to the DCC African-American Culture Club. Proposed
criteria for the Lloyd scholarship, which will be awarded annually,
require that the recipient be a rising sophomore enrolled full time in a
transfer program at DCC (Liberal Arts, Science or Business
Administration); have maintained a grade point average of 2.5 or higher;
and possess good citizenship, character, and sound values
that
have been demonstrated through leadership and civic involvement. The
first scholarship will be awarded
for the 2003-2004 academic year. Martha
Walker, Director of
Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the DCC Educational
Foundation, said plans are underway to create an endowment for the
scholarship.
