FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Staff Contact: Administrative Assistant to the President for Public Relations & Minority Concerns FATHER, SON INDUCTED INTO PHI THETA KAPPA HONOR SOCIETY
DANVILLE,
VA., May 2, 2002 -- Some
would find it awkward to attend classes with a parent. Not so for Steven
Morris, and his father, Larry G. Morris, who
are both in the Administration of Justice program. In addition, they
were recently inducted together in the Upsilon Phi Chapter of Phi Theta
Kappa Honor Society. Larry
Morris is a Deputy Sheriff with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s
Office. He began his higher education studies in the Fall of 1992, and
he has been taking classes ever since.
Because of his demanding work schedule he takes only a part-time
class schedule. “It
has been tough,” Larry says. “I used to work a swing shift which
made it difficult to attend classes, but with the help of my professors
I’ve made it.” In
addition to working full-time, taking classes each semester, Larry also
finds time for other community activities. He is also an Instructor for
the American Red Cross; serves on the Board of Directors for the Contact
Crisis Line; and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and
Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks. Steven
Morris is in his first year at DCC.
Just as his father is taking classes in the Administration of
Justice program, so is Steven. “Like
father like son,” Steven laughs.
When
asked if it is awkward that he and his father are attending college
together, Steven explained
that it is actually helpful having his father in school because they can
share information. “Certain
things that I am doing he already knows and can help me,” Steven says.
Larry
interjects: “And there are classes that Steven has taken that I have
to take that he can, in turn, help me. It is like we are helping one
another to achieve the same goals.” In
addition to going to school full-time, Steven also works as a Student
Security Officer at the college. Upon
receiving his associate degree in Administration of Justice, Steven
plans to transfer to the Old Dominion University’s TeleTechnet program
and pursue a baccalaureate degree.
Both
Larry and Steven count it high honor to be inducted into Phi Theta
Kappa. “It
was very nice. When you know you are getting acknowledged for the work
you are doing, it makes it beneficial ,” Steven explains.
Larry
added it was a “unique and interesting experience”, but nothing new
to their family because his wife and sister were also members of Phi
Theta Kappa. For the Morris
family, Phi Theta Kappa is a family affair. “It
creates a bond that we will all be able to share,” Larry adds.
“Family structure plays a vital role in advanced education.
One must have encouragement and support of family to develop.” What better way of showing family support than father and son, Larry and Steven Morris, going to the same college, seeking the same degree and taking the same classes. What’s more -- the two are also expecting to graduate together. For more
