DCC, LONGWOOD SIGN

MAJOR TRANSFER AGREEMENT

DANVILLE, VA, June 6, 2005 – With just the stroke of a pen, Danville Community College and

Longwood University initiated a major agreement that will ease the transition of graduates from DCC to the four-year university.  The agreement ensures that DCC graduates who earn the Associate of Arts and Science Degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or higher will have guaranteed admission to Longwood University, located in Farmville, VA. This guaranteed admission agreement adds to the articulation agreement that guarantees that these students will have junior class status that all of their credits will transfer, although not all credits earned may apply toward the degree, and that all of their lower-division general education goals (except foreign language) will be met.

This agreement is consistent with Virginia’s “Restructuring Legislation”, which encourages four-year colleges and universities to develop articulation agreements that are consistent with each institution’s mission, have uniform application to all Virginia community colleges, meet appropriate general education and program requirements at the four-year institution, and provide additional opportunities for associate degree graduates to be admitted and enrolled.

Longwood President Dr. Patricia Cormier praised the quality of DCC’s graduates and noted that Associate in Arts and  Science degree holders have graduated from Longwood above the 80% rate with little or no change in their GPAs.”

Dr. Carlyle Ramsey, DCC president expressed appreciation to Dr. Cormier and Longwood for demonstrating the university’s commitment to and interest in community college graduates.

“Longwood University and DCC have been strong partners in education for many years. Now, Longwood has provided DCC graduates with a clear path to baccalaureate degree programs from a growing and dynamic public university,” Ramsey said. Our students have enjoyed wonderful transfer opportunities with Longwood through the years. By signing this formal agreement, we are ensuring our students will continue to enjoy outstanding opportunities to continue their educations in our region. We appreciate the ongoing support we receive from Longwood.”

This agreement will go into effect beginning with students applying to Longwood University for the spring 2006 term.
