DCC, GOODYEAR PROGRAM FEATURED

AT ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE

DANVILLE, VA, October 3, 2002 -- Danville Community College’s program to train industrial maintenance technicians was featured recently at the National Coalition of Advanced Technology Center’s Fall Conference in Baltimore, MD. DCC representatives, Dr. Max Glass, Dean of Workforce Services, and Jeff Arnold, Director of the Center for Business, Industry & Government, along with Jim Price, Project Team Leader - Human Resources, Southern Region, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Memphis, TN, presented the session, entitled “Partnering To Train Giants.”

The session focused on DCC’s partnership with the Danville Public Schools, City of Danville, and Goodyear to provide technical training for Goodyear employees in several critically important job-related areas, including industrial electricians, mechanics, pipefitters, programmable logic controls (PLCs), and hydraulics/pneumatics. The selection of participants, use of Workeys Job Profiling, assessments, and training were part of a model program for use in several states and internationally. DCC started the program in 2000, with the first students completing the program last spring. A second group has been selected for a new training program that began recently.

“The statewide and national attention the (DCC) program commands is a tribute to the quality of the program which is now available in all area industries,” said Dr. Carlyle Ramsey, DCC president. “It also speaks well for the partnership that has been vital to the success of this exemplary training program.”

The National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers is a network of higher education resources that advocates and promotes the use of technology applications that enhance economic and workforce development programs and services. Established in 1988, NCATC member organizations play a proactive role in economic development within their service regions. Approximately 125 community colleges across the United States, including DCC, are members of NCATC.
