DCC TO DEDICATE ROBERT E. MORGAN

CENTER FOR ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS

Robert "Bob " Morgan

DANVILLE, VA, October 4, 2004 – Danville Community College will dedicate the “Robert E. Morgan Center for Electrical and Electronics Technology”, in a ceremony to be held on Friday, Oct. 22, in the L.A. Hill Building on the DCC campus. Dr. B. Carlyle Ramsey, DCC President, said the center is being named in memory of a former long-time professor, who helped shaped the direction of the program. The activities will begin with a luncheon from noon to 1:00p.m., followed by the dedication ceremony at 1:30 p.m.

Ramsey said the public is invited, especially all current and former students from Danville Community College and its predecessor Danville Technical Institute.

“Bob (Morgan) was one of a kind. He touched many lives in the region and this is a fitting and deserving honor,” Ramsey said. “We hope to see all our electrical/electronics students and alumni and the many business and industry representatives who worked with him.”

Born on March 15, 1932, in Andersonville, VA, Morgan served in the U.S. Air Force. He received a diploma in electronics from Danville Technical Institute in 1955, and began his teaching career that year at DTI.  Three years after receiving his teaching appointment, he was named head of the Electrical/Electronics Department.

Under Morgan’s leadership, the department expanded from a radio-television repair program into a comprehensive curriculum offering options in digital and industrial electronics, communications, home entertainment equipment, and appliance repair.  This program has been acclaimed by industry as a model program and has been used as a blueprint by several colleges. Recognized for his innovative approach to teaching, his enthusiasm, and his leadership, Morgan was named the first DCC Outstanding Faculty Member in 1987. He died on May 30, 1994.

In addition to college officials, other current and former students and faculty members are expected to participate in the dedication ceremony. Reservations are required to attend the luncheon which cost $15 per person. However, there is no cost to attend the ceremony only. For more information and luncheon tickets, please contact Martha Walker, Director of Institutional Advancement, at (434) 797-8495.
