DANVILLE, VA, June 4, 2004 -- There will be three opportunities for young people who are rising sixth to eighth graders to attend one-week enrichment camps this summer in Danville, Pittsylvania County, and Halifax County.  The “Kids Exploration Camps”, sponsored by Danville Community College, will be held Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., at the following locations:

  • June 28-July 2: Halifax County Career Center

  • July 12-16: Pittsylvania County Career & Technical Center (Vo-Tech)

  • July 26-July 30: Danville Community College

“This innovative camp provides youth with an opportunity to learn about science in a fun and creative way,” says Dr. Ed White, Dean of Business and Engineering Technologies.  “After the camp they will have the skills to work on an unlimited number of inventing projects.”

Throughout the week, youth will exercise creative thinking skills, work with a variety of tools, learn about patents and the toy industry, and have incredible fun!  During the Kids Exploration Camps, participants will:

  • Design and invent toys, including the opportunity to build a remote race car and compete

  • Learn to present their concepts to a management team

  • Build, test and improve a succession of mock-up toys

  • Conduct market research at a local toy store

  • Create display advertisements for their toys

  • Build a World Wide Web page to promote their toys

  • Write a short business plan

  • Explore career opportunities

The cost to attend a camp is $65, which covers supplies, handouts, use of computer labs, drinks, snacks and field trips.  Each camp session is limited to 20 persons.  Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch each day.    For more information and to register, contact Dr. Ed White at (434) 797-8440, or toll free (800) 560-4291 ext. 8440.
