DCC HOSTS  SOUTH AFRICAN EDUCATORS

 

 

 

DANVILLE, VA., June 21, 2002 -- Danville Community College will host six educators from South Africa who will be visiting the campus on Monday, June 24, 2002.  The group includes the following educators:

  • Professor Roy du Pre’, Executive Director and CEO, Committee of Technikon Principals

  • Professor Nqabomzi Gawe, Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor, Durban Institute of Technology

  • Mr. Johan Jordaan, Senior Lecturer, Research, Community Outreach and Consultancy, PE Technikon - George Campus

  • Mr. Mbodi Khorombi, Senior Lecturer, Applied Natural Sciences

  • Ms. Manoko Seerame, Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering

  • Dr. Christine Winbert, Research Coordinator, Science Faculty, Peninsula Technikon

The purpose of the visit, sponsored by the Rural Community College Initiative (RCCI), is to observe technical education systems in the United States. The South African public higher education system consists of 15 technikons and 21 universities – all state-funded. A technikon is a South African University of Technology. Their specialty is producing quality career and technology education and research. In addition to visiting DCC, they will also travel to North Carolina colleges during their 10-day stay in the U.S.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

10:00 a.m.      DCC Womack Museum: Welcome and an overview of Danville Community College  outreach efforts by Dr. Carlyle Ramsey and members of the College Management Team

10:45 a.m.      Tour of DCC Campus

11:30 a.m.      Danville Area Technology Center: Tour of RCATT and C-BIG program labs

12:00 noon     Luncheon with staff involved in workforce services

2:30 p.m.        Career & Technical Center (US 29):Tour and discussion of the center’s IT programs

4:30 p.m.        The Riddle Center (Gretna): Tour of facility

6:00 p.m.        Dinner with President  Ramsey
