DCC HOSTS KIDS BIZ CAMP 

FOR RISING 6TH-8TH GRADERS

DANVILLE, VA, July 26, 2005 – Danville Community College will host a “Kids Biz Camp” to introduce rising sixth through eighth graders to business and entrepreneurship. The camp will be held August 8-12, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., in DCC’s EIT (Hawkins) Building, Room 18.

            “Kids Biz is a unique camp for several reasons,” said Dr. Edward T. White, Dean of the Business and Engineering Technologies Division. “First, the program provides youth an opportunity to learn about science in a fun and creative way. Second it introduces youth to business and entrepreneurship. And finally, the camp provides them with skills to be creative in inventing new toys even after the camp is concluded.”

White said the camp coordinator will be Lisa Baynes, also a marketing teacher at Tunstall High School. He added that throughout the week, the focus will be on exercising creative thinking skills, working with a variety of tools, learning about patents and the toy industry, and having incredible fun.  Specific activities during the week include:

• conducting research in a local toy store,

• developing ideas for new toys,

• writing business plans,

• creating World Wide Web pages to sell the toys ,

• crafting advertising slogans and,

• developing display ads and fliers to promote their toys.

            The cost to attend a camp is $65.00 per child, which covers supplies, handouts and other materials, drinks, snacks and field trips.  Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch each day.  Register early. Space in the camp is limited to 20 participants.
