DCC RCATT RECEIVES AWARD FOR

'GROWING DIGITAL CAMPAIGN'

Terry McGhee, Coordinator of the Information Technology Institute; Ted Crane, Chair of the Southern Piedmont Technology Council; and Dr. Carlyle Ramsey, President of Danville Community College.

Danville Community College’s Regional Center for Applied Technology and Training (RCATT) was honored with the “Leadership in Outreach” award by  the Southern Piedmont Technology Council. The award recognizes the "Growing Digital Campaign" started by Terry McGhee, Coordinator of the Information Technology Institute. The award was one of seven honors handed out by the SPTC at its Third Technology Awards Banquet held recently in Danville.

The "Growing Digital Campaign" is a regional technology outreach program that provides opportunities for middle and high school aged youth to learn about and use information technology through workshops. The learning environment is moved from the classroom into the community, whereby local events are video streamed for webcasting. Through creating and editing the digital video, students produce relative digital content that can then be live/tape-delayed as Internet broadcasts.

Webcasts have included the American Legion World Series, high school games, races at Big Daddy’s South Boston Speedway,  and a summer wedding. Each event has allowed people who cannot physically attend to view them via the Internet. Each live web cast registers thousands of hits from all over the world and collects hundreds of email notes from viewers. Student crews have worked with Speedvision, TNN, ESPN, and soon Fox Sports.

McGhee joined the DCC staff two years ago to develop the Information Technology Institute. He holds a bachelor’s degree from The Citadel, and a master’s degree in Information Resource Management, with a minor in Networking from the Air Force Institute of Technology. He was previously employed as an Information Technology Manager/Systems Administrator for KETC TV, a PBS affiliate in St. Louis, MO. He also has served as a communications officer with the U.S. Air Force.

For more information about the Growing Digital Campaign, contact Terry McGhee, or phone: 434.773.3010.
