SILVERMAN FAMILY ESTABLISHES NURSING ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP AT DCC
DANVILLE, VA, March 26, 2008 – The family of the late Dr. Herbert R. Silverman, a longtime general surgeon, has established a scholarship endowment fund at Danville Community College. The Hebert R. Silverman M.D. and Evelyn N. Silverman Scholarship Fund, through the DCC Educational Foundation, will provide scholarships for full-time students enrolled in DCC’s nursing programs. The announcement was made recently during a ceremony at DCC. “This is the first Endowed Scholarship to the Educational Foundation that is dedicated solely for our nursing programs at DCC,” said Buddy Rawley, Director of Development. “We appreciate the Silverman Family’s generosity in helping to educate the area’s future health care professionals.” According to Rawley, the recipients of the scholarships to be awarded from the Endowment will be known as “Silverman Scholars.” The first awards are expected to be presented in fall 2009, when DCC’s new Health Sciences Building is completed. Among the speakers at the ceremony were his widow Evelyn Silverman, daughter Sandra Greene, and granddaughters Marcy Nussbaum and Elise Greene Margol. In addition Delegate Danny Marshall read House Joint Resolution No. 608, which he co-patroned with Delegate Don Merricks and Senator Robert Hurt, and celebrated the life of Dr. Silverman. “Throughout his whole life, education was always very important to Dr. Silverman,” Marshall said. “This Nursing Endowment will support education for generations to come.” Dr. Silverman was born in Danville in 1920 and graduated from George Washington High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Harvard University in 1943, and continued his education at the University of Virginia where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree. After completing his general surgical residency, he served his country in the United States Army Medical Corps and spent two years as assistant chief surgeon at the Army’s 210th station hospital in Germany. He returned to Danville after his Army service and practiced general surgery for more than 30 years. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a member of the Danville Historical Society, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, and the American Legion. Dr. Silverman, who died September 17, 2007, is survived by his wife Evelyn, two daughters, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. DCC offers licensed practical nursing and is in the process of establishing a registered nursing program. In addition, DCC offers a number of allied health and nurse aid curricula.
