DCC PHI THETA KAPPA HONOR SOCIETY RECEIVE AWARDS AT INTERNATIONAL MEETING
DANVILLE, VA., April 29, 2008 – Danville Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society brought home a number of
awards recently from the organization’s annual convention held in Philadelphia, PA. DCC’s Chapter – Upsilon Phi was recognized as one of the top 100 chapters internationally. In addition, DCC President Dr. Carlyle Ramsey and Phi Theta Kappa Advisor Sherry Gott were recognized with individual honors. The chapter has been involved in a number of projects focused in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship. These include holding a voter registration drive, making Child ID kits for Make a Difference Day, collecting books for Better World Books and Project Graduation, holding a Leadership Seminar, raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Danville Cancer Association, sponsoring the Carbon Footprint Challenge on campus, recycling aluminum cans for Habitat for Humanity and small electronics to raise money for breast cancer research, sanding and staining gazebos on campus, and cleaning up the streets around the campus. Ramsey was one of 23 community college presidents honored with the “Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction” which is presented to college leaders who have provided extensive support and a variety of resources for their colleges' Phi Theta Kappa chapters, such as faculty advisor release time, a line-item budget for the chapter, financial support for chapters to participate in regional and international events and scholarships for Phi Theta Kappa members. Ramsey also frequently is a speaker at chapter inductions and participates in the All-State Academic Team programs. Gott, an Assistant Professor of English and one of the DCC club advisors, was honored with the “Distinguished Chapter Advisor Award” which recognizes advisors who make significant contributions to the growth of chapter members, serve as the chapter's advocate on campus, and encourage the chapter to be involved on the local, regional and/or international levels of the organization. Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, MS, is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,250 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than two million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually. In addition to Gott, other DCC chapter advisors include Vickie Holland Taylor, Assistant Professor of Sociology, and Dee Drinkard, Assistant Professor of Psychology.
