FORMER DCC PRESIDENT ARNOLD OLIVER SPEAKER FOR SHAVER LECTURE SERIES
DANVILLE, VA, April 9, 2008 – Dr. Arnold R. Oliver, former president of Danville Community College and Chancellor Emeritus of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), will be the guest speaker on Thursday, April 17, for the Robert V. Shaver Arts and Humanities Lecture Series at DCC. The presentation, entitled “Robert Shaver’s Educational Beliefs: A Wonderful Guide to the Essentials of Virginia’s Community Colleges,” will be held at 11 a.m., in Temple Building, Room 110.
Oliver who now lives in Harborton, VA, served as DCC’s president from 1987 until 1991. Prior to that, he served as Dean of Instruction and Student Development at DCC, from 1979 to 1986. During the 1970s, he served in several administrative capacities at Northern Virginia Community College. In 1992, he was named Chancellor of the VCCS, a position held until 2001 when he was named a Distinguished Professor of English at Eastern Shore Community College.
Oliver earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Michael's College, Master of Arts degree from the University of Idaho, and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in higher education from Southern Illinois University. The lecture series is named in memory of Robert V. (Bob) Shaver, a long-time English professor, film buff and former DCC administrator. Shaver began his teaching career at the Danville Branch of Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in September 1958, and he was among the faculty who assisted with the transition as Danville-VPI merged with Danville Technical Institute to form Danville Community College in 1968. In addition to serving as a Division Chair, Shaver also served as Interim Dean of Instruction and Student Development, and as the college’s interim president during January and February 1992. Shaver was also responsible for the creation of many arts and humanities projects at the college, including the annual DCC Celebration of the Arts, now in its 26th year.
