DCC SETS GROUNDBREAKING FOR NEW HEALTH SCIENCES BUILDING
DANVILLE, VA, February 21, 2008 – The groundbreaking for Danville Community College’s new Health Sciences Building has been set for Friday, February 29, at 10 a.m. on the building’s site at the corner of South Main Street and Kemper Road. A number of local and state officials, plus members of the medical, business, and educational communities are expected to attend. Dewberry, Inc. is the architecture and engineering firm, while Blair Construction Co. is the contractor. The building is scheduled for completion by Spring 2009.
DCC President Dr. Carlyle Ramsey expressed thanks to the generosity of the Danville Regional Foundation for the $9.7 million donation. “The College is able to continue its initiatives to expand educational access in allied health careers; strengthen the area’s workforce; assist with economic development; and partner in community development to improve health care services for all citizens.”
With approximately 27,000 square feet
of space, the Health Sciences Building will enable DCC to expand
existing programs of study in Practical Nursing, Medical Lab Technology,
Medical Terminology/Coding, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy, Advanced
Phlebotomy, and Dental Hygiene. The expansion will increase the allied
health programs’ capacity, allow classes to be taught at a central
location, and provide the latest in advanced technology. In addition, the new building will house new programs, such as Registered Nursing (RN), Radiology, Surgical Technology, and Basic Dental Assisting. It will also house the Associate in Applied Science Degree program in Health Sciences, LPN to RN Bridge program, Clinical Skills lab (for Certified Nurse Aide, Licensed Practical Nursing, and Registered Nursing courses), Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting program (classroom and clinical site), on-site Medical Lab Technician program, home health aide, and expanded Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training.
