NEW EMPLOYEES JOIN DCC - May 1, 2007

 

Mary Dumont of Danville is now a part-time instructor for Middle College II at Danville Community College. She previously served as an instructor of Middle College I for nearly two years. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1979 from Belmont Abbey College and will earn her Master of Arts Degree in Education from Averett University in Fall of 2007.

Dumont taught at Westwood Middle School for three years, and was a manager at Industries of the Blind from five years, Burlington Industries for seven years and Goodwill Industries for three years. In addition to her teaching, Dumont is involved with the Danville Historical Society, Danville Running and Fitness Club, and a Parent Teacher Organization. She also has an interest in restoring old homes and has run in seven marathons plus a 50 mile-long stretch.

Dorothy Teressa Hairston, a resident of Cascade, now serves as Project Secretary for the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) at Danville Community College. Previously, she worked part time as a Receptionist/Financial Aid Technician for more than five years. She earned both an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Administrative Support Technology and a Certificate in Office Information Processing in May 2006.

Before employment at DCC in 2001, she was a substitute teacher at Pittsylvania County Schools and was a Teller/Customer Service Representative at Bank of America for eight years. In her new position, Hairston will provide clerical and administrative support to the EOC Project Director and project staff.

C. Bracken Jones of Danville has been named Information Technology Specialist II at Danville Community College. He earned his Associate in Applied Science in Computer Information Systems from DCC in 1993 and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management Information Systems from Longwood University in 1995.

Previously, he worked as a Network Administrator for ten years at Virginia Information Technologies Agency at the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute and as a Programmer at Dan River Mills, Inc. In his new position, Jones is responsible for assisting in the planning and administration of the college’s information security program, among other Information Technology support functions. He has been on the DCC Information Technology Systems Curriculum Advisory Committee since 2001 and is a past member of Who’s Who Among Students in America’s Junior Colleges. On his spare time, he trains his dog in obedience and enjoys outdoor activities.

C. Bracken Jones

Dr. Linda F. Larkin, formerly of Fredericksburg, has been named Director of the Riddle Center. She recently retired from full-time employment at Germanna Community College where she was held the position of Dean of the Learning Resources Center for six years and Site Coordinator for the University of Richmond’s Weekend College for one year. She also has served as an adjunct assistant professor for the University of Richmond, teaching several courses in the School of Continuing Studies.

Larkin has been employed as a Librarian at Germanna and Blue Ridge Community College, and as a librarian for Staff Development with the Department of Corrections in Waynesboro. She also worked as Children’s Department Head for the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library in Charlottesville. She has held other librarian positions in New York State.  Larkin holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Richmond College of the City University of New York; a Master of Science Degree in Library Science from Columbia University; and her PhD in Public Policy and Administration fro Virginia Commonwealth University.

James “Jim” Lindley of Danville has been named Counselor. He previously worked on a part-time basis as an Instructor and Developmental Studies Counselor at the College for three years. Lindley earned his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Management at DCC; his Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services Counseling at Old Dominion University; and his Master of Science Degree in Community and College Counseling at Longwood University.

In his new full-time position, Lindley will counsel students, work with club sports and student activities. He serves as chairman of the Virginia Student Services Commission and is a member of the Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators and assists with the Virginia Student Leadership Conference. At DCC, he also serves as an advisor for the Student Government Association and the Basketball Club Sports.

Wilhemena Lipscomb, a resident of Yanceyville, NC has been employed part-time as Middle College Instructor at Danville Community College. After taking classes at DCC, she entered the College Transfer Program at Piedmont Community College, and in 1990, earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Deaf Education, Speech and Hearing from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro.

Previously, she worked at Piedmont Community College for eight years as an Adult Basic Skills Instructor and Coordinator. Since 1968, she has been an usher and in the choir at New Ephesus Baptist Church. She has also served on the Advisory committee for both Partnerships for Children and the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. For six years, she was a member of Deaf Education Club. On her spare time, Lipscomb enjoys reading, gardening and making floral arrangements.

Barbara M. Perkins, a resident of Alton, has been named Counselor/Financial Aid Officer at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) in South Boston. She is a nationally-certified counselor with more than 22 years of experience in community college counseling. Perkins worked at Southside Virginia Community College as a Counselor for 15 years and as Director of Counseling for more than seven years. She earned both her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and her Master of Science Degree in Counseling Psychology from Radford University. She also earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Community and Agency Counseling from Virginia Tech. Perkins is a lifetime member of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society for Psychology, and she has served on the Halifax County Improvement Council for four years.

Gerald Sexton of Danville has been named Instructor and Coordinator of the new Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Wood Products Technology at Danville Community College. The Center was established to provide specialized training to existing and potential employees of wood products-related companies, including Swedwood North America; Yorktowne Cabinetry, Inc., Columbia Flooring, Inc., Columbia Forest Products, Inc., and Huber Engineered Woods, LLC. 

Sexton earned an Associate of Science Degree in Business from Gadsden State Junior College; a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Occupational Technology (Electrical/Electronic) from Jacksonville State University; and a Certificate in Vocational Education from Alabama A&M University. He was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, where he worked several capacities including, as a Journeyman Industrial Electrician, Maintenance Instructor/Coordinator and Maintenance/Production Training Coordinator.

Sue Sizemore of Danville has been named Administrative and Office Specialist III at Danville Community College. She previously worked at DCC part-time as an Administrative Assistant. In December 2006, she earned an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Administrative Support Technology and a Certificate in Office Information Processing at DCC. Prior to working at DCC, she was employed by Dan River, Inc. and was a secretary at Retail Merchants Association.

Sue Sizemore

Cheryl Terry, a native and resident of Halifax, has been named Director of Business and Industry Services. She previously served as the Director of DCC’s Middle College. Terry earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems from DeVry Institute of Technology and her Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Electronic Commerce from the University of Dallas. Terry is a certified Internet Webmaster. She is a 2007 graduate of the DCC Leadership Academy’s inaugural class.

Prior to coming to DCC, Terry worked in Texas as a trainer and manager and her background included assisting business and industry. In addition to her workforce experience, Terry worked in project management, systems support, and programming for web-based applications for 14 years. She also taught algebra at Halifax County High School and is currently an adjunct accounting instructor for Southside Virginia Community College.

Active in her community, she is a participant in Leadership-Halifax County and a board member for the Southside Outreach Group. She also is a mentor with the Mentor Role Model Program; and a member of New Vernon Baptist Church where she is a Sunday School teacher and chair of the Scholarship Committee.
