FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Staff Contacts: Director of Public Relations & Minority Concerns Public Relations & Marketing Specialist EMPLOYEES HONORED FOR WORKFORCE SERVICES
DANVILLE, VA, June 4, 2007 – Four Danville Community College employees were honored with Workforce Development Services (WDS) Chancellor’s Instructor/Trainer Awards for their efforts in workforce development services. Sponsored by Virginia’s Community Colleges, the Chancellor’s Instructor/Trainee Awards were presented to Mark McFaddin, Coordinator of the Motorcycle Rider Safety Program; Mike Jones, Adjunct Instructor in Industrial Maintenance Technology; Robert Agee, Adjunct Instructor in the Pharmacy Technician program; and Cheryl Terry, Director of Business and Industry Services. Each recipient was honored in one of the four categories: Employer Services (Customized Training), Occupation Specific Instruction and Services, Career Paths (Transitional Instruction and Services) and Community Services. They were selected based on their outstanding course evaluations, years of service and assistance in program development.
“The primary role of Workforce Services is to identify the needs of the community and develop programs to meet those needs,” says Dr. Max Glass, Vice President of Workforce Services. “These individuals work in four separate programs which are all representative of the quality services provided by (DCC’s) Workforce Services.”
McFaddin, honored in the Community Services category, was instrumental in developing the Motorcycle Rider Safety program, which was established in 1997. The weekend program continues to be one of the most popular at DCC.
Jones was recognized in the Employer Services category. He has more than 30 years of experience in the industrial maintenance industry and has worked with DCC for three years. He played a significant role in the development of a $1 million training program for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and he also provides training for numerous other area companies.
Agee, who has also been involved with DCC’s Pharmacy Technician program for three years, was recognized in the Occupation Specific Instruction and Services category. With his assistance, Glass says there has been a high rate of success in pharmacy technician graduates achieving certification.
The fourth recipient, Terry, has been employed at the college for three years and was recognized in the Career Paths category. She established DCC’s Middle College program, which provides opportunities for young adults 18-24 to earn a General Education Development certificate and workplace skills. The program has been so successful that Middle College II for adults, 25 years and older, was established in Spring 2007.
