DANVILLE, VA, June 19, 2007 – Fifty-one Danville Community College students in the Cosmetology and Pharmacy Technician Career Studies programs were honored recently at a completion ceremony. Cheryl Terry, Director of Business and Industry Services, and Joe Alexander, Coordinator of Apprenticeship Training, were the keynote speakers. Certificates were presented by Dr. Max Glass, Vice President of Workforce Services, and Kirby Wright, Director of Special Projects. DCC offers two divisions of the Cosmetology program: Apprenticeship and Full–School. The Apprenticeship Cosmetology program is designed for students who take classes at DCC while spending 3,000 hours of on-the-job training at a local beauty shop under the direction of a licensed cosmetologist or barber. The Full–School Cosmetology program is a Career Studies program that trains students to take the state board cosmetology exam. Students in both divisions must pass the state board exam to become a licensed cosmetologist. Likewise, students in the Pharmacy Technician program must also pass a state board exam to obtain licensure. This Career Studies program trains students for employment in hospital, home health care and retail pharmacies, among other jobs.
