DANVILLE, VA, May 22, 2007 – The Danville Community College Knights Baseball Team was recently
recognized at the 2007 Awards and Recognition Banquet. The team was also honored for winning the 2007 Virginia Community Colleges’ Baseball Conference Championship, the team’s third state win since their 2001 debut. Former Gretna High School standout Tony Womack, who played professional baseball for 13 years, was the guest speaker. He was a member of the 2001 World Series Champion Arizona Diamondbacks (1999-2003) and has played for the Pittsburg Pirates (1993-1998), Colorado Rockies (2003), Chicago Clubs (2003, 2006), St. Louis Cardinals (2004), New York Yankees (2005), and Cincinnati Reds (2006). Womack encouraged the players not to give up on their dream of playing professional baseball and stressed the importance of increasing their game statistics. DCC students Wesley Francis, Blairs, a Liberal Arts major; Drew Gurkin, Danville, Administration of Justice—Law Enforcement Specialization; and Chris Perkins, South Boston, Information Systems Technology - Computer Programming, were named to the VCCS All Tournament Team. Named To All Conference First Team were Tyler Clarke, South Boston, Administration of Justice—Law Enforcement Specialization; Francis; Gurkin; Cordaryll Richardson, Java, Liberal Arts; and Perkins. In addition, Second Team All Conference members were Bucky Brown, Danville, Administration of Justice—Law Enforcement Specialization; Eddie Pyle, Danville, Science; Steven Pittmon, Chatham, Precision Machining Technology; Francis; Gurkin; and Perkins. Receiving Honorable Mentions were Perkins and Ryan Roller, Scottsburg, Precision Machining Technology. Perkins and Francis shared the Most Valuable Player award. However, Perkins also received the Coach’s Award and the Academic Award for his 3.95 grade point average. Others recognized for their participation on the team included: Scott Gieselman, Danville, Science; Ryan Hairston, Danville, Administration of Justice—Law Enforcement Specialization; Joe Kelly, Dry Fork, Business Management; Chris Martin, Danville, Liberal Arts; Ross Myers, Yanceyville, NC, Liberal Arts; Lee Vogler, Danville, Liberal Arts; Herbie Williams, Danville, Liberal Arts. Head coach John Bailey was honored with the Coach of the Year award. Bailey was assisted this season by Dale Nelson and Brad Bailey, both Assistant Coaches, and by Nancy Taylor, DCC Baseball Club Sports Advisor.
