New Employees Join DCC Faculty and
Staff – August 2006

Cathy
Barrett of Danville has
been named Program Development Coordinator- Allied Health Education
Administrator. Barrett received her RN Diploma from the Memorial
Hospital School of Nursing in Danville. She later earned a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia and a
Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Old Dominion University.
She is certified by the American Heart Association as a Health Care
Provider, and as a Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NPR) Provider.
Barrett has served as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at DCC and is
also teaching web-based nutrition classes. She also worked as an RN
Shift Leader at Danville Regional Medical Center. Prior to that, she
served as a Staff Nurse in the Labor and Delivery Unit of the
Women’s and Children’s Services at DRMC. In her new position,
Barrett will identify potential grant sources for start-up costs,
estimate faculty and equipment costs, identify program space needs,
and develop implementation schedules for the identified programs.

for healthcare services in Danville and surrounding communities.

Johnny Thomas Bullock
has been
employed as Trades Technician. He comes to DCC with over 30 years of
maintenance experience. Previously, he worked as Maintenance
Supervisor at Averett University and at the Blanch Correctional
Institution where he supervised the maintenance of the boilers,
pumps, pressure vessels, air compressors, plumbing, and all
electrical equipment inside the prison. Bullock has held several
other positions, including Power House Water Plant Lead Operator and
Warper Operator at Dan River Inc. While in the United States Army,
24th Field Service in Germany, Bullock served as the Generator
Maintenance and Operator E4. Bullock has also taken several
maintenance and operations courses at Piedmont Technical College. In
his new position, Bullock’s duties will include carpentry, plumbing,
modification and repair of facilities and equipment, and minor
construction projects.
"It is exciting
to bring my wide range of experience into the Danville Community
College setting,” says Bullock. “I will try to the best of my
ability to help the college maintain its beautiful campus and
buildings.”

Cathy Holley Conner
has
been named Director of the Southern Piedmont Educational Opportunity
Center in the Workforce Services Office. Conner earned a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Management and Psychology from Averett College.
She received certification from the Institute of Certified
Professional Managers at James Madison University and her Assisted
Living Administrator Certification from DCC. She also has a Masters
Degree in Business Administration from Averett University.
Previously, Conner served as Coordinator of Career Placement and the
Southern Piedmont Tech Prep Consortium at DCC, an adjunct faculty
member at the college; and as Community Director at Outlook Pointe
in Danville. Conner is affiliated with several organizations,
including the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), where
she serves as Secretary and the Education Committee Chair. She also
is a member of the Danville Public Schools Career and Technical
Education Advisory Board, the Pittsylvania Career and Technical
Education Advisory Board, the Old Dominion University Community
Advisory Board, and the Danville Area Leadership Council. In her new
position, Conner will be responsible for the overall management of
the Southern Piedmont Education Opportunity Center project, which
provides educational opportunities for low income adults and
potential first generation college students 19 years of age or older
who do not have the academic or economic resources to pursue a
postsecondary education.

Jerry Franklin
of
Ringgold has been named Director of Manufacturing and Technical
Services in the Workforce Services Office. He previously worked
part-time as a Program Coordinator in Workforce Services. Prior to
coming to DCC, Franklin was employed for 20 years at ABB, and its
predecessor, Westinghouse. He later was a consultant for nine years
with Virginia Business Systems. A Danville native, Franklin attended
DCC, receiving his Associate of Science Degree in pre-engineering.
He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering and
Operations Research from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State
University. In his new position, Franklin will coordinate workforce
development and training for local industries, as well as develop
and expand the Workforce Services curricula.
“I
have been working part-time for a number of years to develop
programs and training for industry,” Franklin says. “This job allows
me to continue this work full-time. I look forward to serving our
business and industry customers and helping
DCC play a critical role in the region’s economic development.”

Elizabeth
Perkins Hall
of Danville, has been named an Instructor of Developmental English.
Hall earned Associate of Arts and Bachelor of the Arts degrees in
English from Averett College. She later earned a Master of Arts
Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University. Hall has a total of 31 years of
teaching experience, with 25 of those years at the college level,
serving as an adjunct lecturer at DCC. She has also served as a
workshop facilitator, a developmental writing instructor for the
Learning Communities, and a Coordinator for the Developmental
Learning Communities since January 2005. Hall was also employed as a
classroom teacher at Dan River High School;
as a counselor, teacher, and supervisor at the Fred T. Hatcher
Activity Center; and an instructor in the Academically-Gifted
Program of the Danville Public Schools.
“I am
deeply committed to helping DCC students prepare themselves for
fulfilling lives and careers,” Hall says.

Christy Spencer Hatcher
of Alton, has been hired as an Instructor of Developmental
Mathematics. Hatcher earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Mathematics and a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics Education,
both from Averett University. She also earned her Master of Science
Degree in Educational Leadership from Longwood University. She also
has her Virginia Collegiate Professional License. Previously,
Hatcher was as an adjunct Mathematics teacher at DCC for the last
three years. She also worked as a math teacher for the Danville
Public Schools, assigned to Langston Focus School. While at
Langston, she served as head of the Mathematics Department and
managed the Cortez Mathematics Lab for the past two years. As an
Instructor of Developmental Mathematics, Hatcher will teach basic
mathematics, algebra, and geometry by using a variety of formats,
such as math lab and lecture formats.
“I am looking
forward to working with DCC’s students, faculty, and community,”
Hatcher says.

Jue-Ling Tai,
a Danville resident, has been named Assistant Professor of
Mathematics. Tai earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Statistics
at the National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan, and later her
Master of Science Degree in Mathematics at the University of
Cincinnati.. Tai has served as an adjunct faculty member at DCC for
the past two years, as well as serving as a tutor in the Title III
Grant Mentoring/Tutoring program. Tai also served as Director of
Institutional Research at Averett University since August 2004. She
has served as an adjunct faculty member at Averett and at National
Business College. From 1989-2003, she was employed as the Management
Information Systems Manager for the Danville-Pittsylvania Community
Services. In her new position, Tai’s teaching assignments will
include statistics, pre-calculus, and applied calculus classes.
“I plan to bring
my energy and knowledge of statistics to help students solve
problems by applying logic and skill to meet their academic goals
and career plans,” Tai says.

Constantine
Terzopoulos,
formerly of New York City, has been named Assistant Professor of
Mathematics. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Mathematics/Computer Science from Empire State College, and later
earned a Master of Science Degree in Computer Sciences from City
College - The City University of New York. Also, Terzopoulos earned
a Master of Arts Degree in Applied Mathematics from Hunter College.
Currently, he is enrolled in the Mathematics Ph.D. program at the
Graduate School, The City University of New York. Previously,
Terzopoulos has held adjunct teaching positions at New Jersey
community colleges, including Mercer County Community College,
Burlington County Community College, and Raritan Valley Community
College. He has also served as a lecturer at Empire State College.
He has taught Developmental Mathematics, Arithmetic, Algebra,
Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability, PreCalculus, Calculus and
Ordinary Differential Equations, both online and in the classroom.
He holds multiple information systems technology certifications.
Having served in the military as a Second Lieutenant in Greece, he
is a member of the American Mathematical Association and volunteers
in the community by tutoring adults in developmental mathematics and
participating in charity and community activities at the local
Masonic lodge. In his new position, Terzopoulos’ teaching
assignments will include statistics, pre-calculus, and applied
calculus classes, and probability.
“I want to make a
difference (here at DCC),” Terzopoulos says. “I want to make a
positive contribution to this community by helping students strive
to meet their goals.

Mark Coleman Wallace
of Kenbridge, has been named Assistant Professor of History. Wallace
earned a Bachelor of the Arts Degree in English at The College of
William and Mary. He later earned his Master of Arts Degree in
English Literature from George Mason University and completed his
Doctorate of Philosophy degree in Scottish History from the
University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Previously, Wallace served as
an adjunct faculty member for the Southside Virginia Community
College’s Dual Enrollment program in Lunenburg County, where he
taught political science and U.S. government/history. He also taught
at the University of St. Andrews’s Department of Scottish History
and in the Department of Modern History. Wallace taught education
classes through the Workforce Development and Continuing Education
Program at Southside Virginia Community College. In addition to his
teaching experience, Wallace has published numerous reviews on
Scottish history in publications such as the Scottish Historical
Review, Eighteenth Century Scotland, History Scotland, and Research
Journal of Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076. He has presented papers
on Scottish history topics for numerous conferences and meetings.
Wallace also has a book review and an article forthcoming in the
British Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies. He is affiliated
with the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and the
Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society. Wallace recently
recorded his third bluegrass album, entitled “Bluegrass State of
Mind,” which features eight original songs and compositions. In his
new position, Wallace’s duties will include teaching first and
second year history courses, including Western Civilization and U.S.
History.
“I am bringing
my cultural, academic, and social experiences, having lived in
Britain for four and one-half years and traveled throughout Western
and Eastern Europe,” Wallace says. “I also will enjoy using my
musical abilities to enhance my overall experience at DCC and in the
community.”

"Joe" Alexander,
a resident of Danville,
is Director of Apprenticeship Training and Special Projects in the
Workforce Services Office. He previously served as principal of the
Pittsylvania Career and Technical
Center for three years, and as coordinator of Adult Education and
Community Education and as Administrative Assistant at the
Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center. He has also been employed
as a classroom teacher in the Pittsylvania County Public Schools and
as a teacher and coach in the Iredell County Public Schools in
Statesville, NC. Alexander earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Social Science from Appalachian State University, and his Master’s
Degree in Education with certification in secondary, elementary, and
middle school administration from the University
of Virginia. He has also completed graduate course work in
alcohol/drug resistance at Virginia Commonwealth University. As the
new Director of Apprenticeship Training and Special Projects,
Alexander will meet with business and industry representatives to
design, develop, and offer customized training programs to meet
specialized needs, such as the Building Trades, Pharmacy Technician,
and Cosmetology/Barbering programs and other emerging program needs.

Gazetta Logan
is the Evening Administrator/Off-Campus Registrar in the
Workforce Services Office. A resident of Blairs, Logan
earned a Bachelor of the Arts Degree in Spanish from Virginia State
University. She also participated in the “Study Abroad Program” at
the University of Madrid and the Official School of Languages in
Madrid Spain. She is a licensed Spanish teacher and Certified
Bilingual Educational Specialist. Logan has taught Spanish at Chatham
High School and
Bartlett Yancey High School in
Yanceyville, NC. She also has taught in schools in Washington,
D.C., Richmond and Petersburg. In addition, she has taught Academic
and Basic Reading and Mathematics at Danville’s Sylvan Learning
Center. She served as a Spanish Consult for the Pittsylvania County
Community Action Agency; worked as an Information Specialist in
North Carolina
A & T State
University’s Financial Aid Office; and worked as an International
Office Assistant at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. Her
responsibilities as Administrative Assistant/Off Campus Registrar
include conducting off-campus registration at the Riddle Center in
Gretna, various Neighborhood Educational Opportunity Centers, and at
other locations throughout the service region as the need arises.
She also will serve as the Administrative Assistant on campus in the
evenings. |
