FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Staff Contact: Director of Public Relations & Minority Concerns DCC RECEIVES MAJOR GIFT FOR SUPPORT OF STUDENT CENTER
DANVILLE, VA., Dec. 20, 2005 --The Danville Lions Foundation and the Danville Kiwanis Foundation brought an early Christmas present to Danville Community College. The two foundations recently pledged $700,000 major gift to the college’s proposed student center. The funds resulted from a proposal to the E. Stuart James Grant Trust. Members of the DCC Board and Educational Foundation, as well as DCC’s faculty, staff, and students were on hand recently to accept the gift. Representing the Lions Foundation were: David Clark, President, Danville Lions Foundation; Roger Gillispie, Danville Morning Lions; Amy Nunn-Flippen, Danville Host Lions. The Kiwanis representatives included: Kenneth Miller, Loretta Aron, Patrick L. Daly, Donald Pippin, Dr. Harry Kolendrianos, and Landon Wyatt, Jr. “We were exceedingly pleased that both the Danville Lions Foundation and the Kiwanis Foundation submitted a major proposal to the Grant Trust in support of the student center,” Ramsey said. Student Government Association President Sean Davis echoed Ramsey’s sentiment and added that the proposed student center will benefit not only DCC students but the future workforce of the area. “If we can generate a better academic facility, it would benefit everyone,” Davis said. “The student center is being created to provide one location as a hub for students. We want to provide a central spot for information and activities and a place for students to comfortably congregate to study, meet with other students or take a little downtime between classes.” Davis added that after conducting a student survey in 2004, he found that 60 percent of students were on campus longer than two hours, many with nowhere to go between classes. Using this information and other data, Davis addressed the DCC Board and provided a summary of the survey results which indicated that a student center was a high priority for students. The new 6,000 square-foot center will be located in the center of the main campus in Danville, and will include a student lounge, meeting rooms, covered outdoor plaza, food service, Student Government Association and other club offices, fully-wired Internet access, and a location for cultural performances and presentations. The $1.5 million dollar project is projected for 2008.
