CANDACE COOPER NAMED OUTSTANDING ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR
DANVILLE, VA, October 9, 2006 — Candace “Candy” Cooper, an Instructor of Developmental Mathematics, has been selected as Outstanding Adjunct Professor at Danville Community College for 2006-07. In addition to a plaque, Cooper receives a monetary gift from the DCC Educational Foundation. Cooper graduated from Averett University in 1975, receiving a bachelor’s degree in education. As a developmental mathematics instructor, she teaches everything from basic arithmetic to algebra, with algebra being her favorite subject. “In high school I was leaning towards teaching elementary math, but after a year at Averett and 15 math courses, I decided on college teaching,” Cooper says of her decision to teach college-level math. Cooper adds that she enjoys helping students succeed in math. “I think because students haven’t been successful in the past, they feel that they will never be able to comprehend it,” Cooper says of the misconceptions students have of math. Her most important goal is to try to build confidence in her students. Dr. Wade Davenport, Dean of the Arts and Sciences Division, says Cooper is committed to teaching and seeing her students succeed. “She has consistently over the years received numerous awards from faculty and students. I can’t think of anyone else that deserves this award more than her,” Davenport says. In her spare time, Cooper says she enjoys reading, crafts, and her ultimate hobby: solving sudoku puzzles.
