ASHLEY HUNT MAKES

DCC SPORTS HISTORY!

DANVILLE, VA, Aug. 2, 2006 -- Ashley Hunt has made Danville Community College sports

Peter Castiglione, Director of Student Development and Enrollment Management, left, and Wendi Goods, DCC Head Women’s Basketball Coach, right, congratulate Ashley Hunt, center, the DCC Lady Knight player who is headed to West Virginia University Institute of Technology.

history!

She is the first DCC student to be recruited by a four-year college to continue her college basketball career. The 20-year-old student in DCC’s Graphic Imaging Technology Program will pursue a baccalaureate degree in printing graphics at the West Virginia University Institute of Technology in Montgomery, WV. Hunt, who has been a member of the DCC’s Woman’s Basketball Club Sport for two years, will also continue to play basketball at West Virginia University Institute of Technology.

“I am so happy to be able to both study the major and play the sport that I love!” exclaimed Hunt.

Actually, Hunt pursued West Virginia University Institute of Technology as a student to continue her education, not as a basketball player, said Wendi Goods, coach of DCC”s Women’s Basketball Club Sport.

“Ashley knows her role on the court,” said Goods. “She played different roles as needed. She is a dedicated player and student. Her dedication has paid off.”

Goods added that Hunt was instrumental in the development of the Lady Knights’, since Hunt was a member of the inaugural squad. Prior to coming to DCC, Hunt played one year on the George Washington High School’s Junior Varsity Girl’s Basketball Team and one year on the Varsity Girls’ Basketball team, said Goods.

“She is the first person I recruited because I knew of her basketball history while she attended G.W.,” Goods said. “She helped spread the word and recruited several players from within the community to participate on the team.”

Howard Graves, DCC counselor, described Hunt as “a student with great potential.”

“We are so proud of her; she has tremendous potential,” said Graves. “She will go on to West Virginia U-Tech’s program and continue to open doors for herself. She has prepared herself well and we all feel like she will be a success!”

Pete Castiglione, DCC’s Director of Student Development, agreed that Hunt’s success at DCC will grow tenfold at West Virginia U-Tech.

“We believe that as she continues her studies, she will continue to be an asset to the university as she was at DCC,” said Castiglione. “She will make it back to DCC and be able to share her experiences with the students. She will be a mentor to other students, just like her coach, Wendi Goods, is to the students.”

Goods said Hunt’s success is a parallel to DCC’s mission. She said Hunt’s success will act as a stimulus for more female students who want to play college basketball to enroll at DCC with the knowledge that they may transfer to a four-year college and continue to play basketball on the college level.

“Her success only confirms that DCC offers many opportunities to its students,” said Goods. “Students have the chance to come to DCC, to play ball, and then move on to a four-year college.”
