DCC Welcomes New Employees - September 2007

 

 

Cathy Barrett of Danville has been named Program Development Coordinator- Allied Health Education Administrator. Barrett received her RN Diploma from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Danville. She later earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia and a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Old Dominion University. She is certified by the American Heart Association as a Health Care Provider, and as a Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NPR) Provider. Barrett has served as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at DCC and is also teaching web-based nutrition classes. She also worked as an RN Shift Leader at Danville Regional Medical Center. Prior to that, she served as a Staff Nurse in the Labor and Delivery Unit of the Women’s and Children’s Services at DRMC.

Cathy Barrett

Bonnie W. Cooley of Apex, NC has been named assistant professor of nursing. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Old Dominion University; a Master of Science Degree in Maternal/Child Nursing from Vanderbilt University; and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee. She is currently completing requirements for a family nurse practitioner post-master’s certificate from the University of North Carolina. Cooley, who has been an adjunct faculty member at DCC since 2004, also taught at Danville Regional Medical Center’s School of Nursing. Other positions held by Cooley include Risk Management Director at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, a Review Specialist at Chesapeake General Hospital, as well as an attorney in private practice in Johnson City, TN.

Travis Dix of Danville has been hired as the Information Technology Specialist I. He previously was employed as a Network Support Technician for the Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services, and a PC Technician for Inacom Information Systems in Greensboro, and Dewberry’s Computers in Danville. Dix earned his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Information Systems Technology at DCC. He is A+ Certified and Hewlett Packard Certified for Laserjet Basics. He is a graduate of Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Southside program.

Meagan Dyer of South Boston has been named Coordinator of Middle College II. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from James Madison University and is pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Education–Community and College Counseling from Longwood University. She expects to complete her studies this fall. Dyer is no stranger to the Middle College program. She previously was employed as the In-School Youth Case Manager for the Workforce Investment Act’s In School Youth Program and as a Coordinator and Administrative Assistant for the Middle College program at Southside Virginia Community College. She also has been employed as a Behavior Specialist with Family Preservation Services in Danville.

Meagan Dyer

Ana Ruiz Fodor has been named Assistant Professor of History. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Universidad Centroamericana, Managua, Nicaragua in 1979, and two master’s degrees in foreign language and history from West Virginia University. She also holds a teaching certificate in women’s studies from WVU. She has taught at several schools, including WVU, Salem International University and at Fairmont State College. Ruiz-Fodor was an editor and journalist for 17 years working for La Prensa (Newspaper) in Managua, Nicaragua. She has completed numerous scholarly research for publication regarding women’s studies and other historical topics. She has also been recognized with Nicaragua’s National Theatre’s Contribution to the Arts and Culture Award, and by the United Nations Office in Managua for her contributions to Journalism.

Nancy Jefferson of Cascade has been named Administrative and Office Specialist II for Middle College II. She earned a Certificate in Clerical Studies and an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Administrative Support Technology, both from Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC). She is completing studies for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Franklin University. Prior to working at DCC, Jefferson was the Trade Act Coordinator at PHCC. In her new position, she will provide clerical and administrative support to the Director of Middle College and program staff.

Anna M. Parker of Eden, NC, has been named Education Support Specialist with the Southern Piedmont Educational Opportunity Center. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Virginia Tech, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to coming to DCC, Parker held the positions of advisor for the Educational Talent Search program and as a high school Career Coach at Patrick Henry Community College.

Donald R. Pippin, a resident of Danville, is now Director of  the Middle College. He previously was employed as the Senior Mentor Supervisor for the college’s Title III program. Pippin earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Health and Physical Education from Lynchburg College. He has completed additional graduate level courses at the University of Virginia, Longwood College, Averett University and Converse College. Pippin also served in several other DCC positions including adjunct instructor and  Mentor/Tutor for Developmental Studies courses. In addition, he has been employed by the Danville Adult and Continuing Education Center as a General Educational Development (GED) Mathematics and Basic Computer Skills Instructor, and Computer Center Coordinator. Pippin has attended the Kellogg Institute for the Training and Certification of Developmental Educators and has served on the Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Youth Services Committee of the Danville Area Kiwanis Club. In addition, Pippin has been honored with the Central Virginia Governor’s School Quality Educator of the Year, Staunton River High School’s Faculty Member of the Year, DCC Outstanding Adjunct Instructor of the Year, and the DCC Student Government Association’s 2007 Teacher of the Year.

Richie Jones Robertson of Blairs has been named Instructor of Administrative Support Technology at Danville Community College. She earned a Certificate in Stenography from DCC in 1980 and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration—Secretarial Administration from Averett College in 1986. Prior to coming to DCC in a full time capacity, she was employed as an Instructor of Office Systems/Business Technology at Piedmont Community College for eight years; a part-time instructor at DCC for seven years; and in the span of 15 years, served in three capacities for the City of Danville: Budget Administrative Assistant, Personnel Specialist—Employment and Benefits, and Senior Secretary. In addition to teaching courses in the Administrative Support Technology program, she will co-sponsor DCC’s chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).

Calvin L. "C.L." Scarce, Jr., of Danville has been named a Career Coach and will assist students at Chatham and Tunstall High Schools in Pittsylvania County. No stranger to secondary education, Scarce most recently served as Supervisor of Career and Technology Education and Adult Education with the Pittsylvania County Public Schools and as principal at the Career & Technology School for four years, and principal at Tunstall High School for 21 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from Milligan College (TN); a Master of Science Degree in Physical Education from Lynchburg College; and a Master of Education Degree in Secondary and Elementary Administration from the University of Virginia.

C.L. Scarce, Jr.

James F. “Jim”  Sutherland of Danville has been named Senior Mentor for the Title III program. He is also a certified math tutor and Instructor of Developmental Mathematics. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry from Erskine College, and his Master’s Degree in Education from Liberty University. Prior to joining the staff at DCC, Sutherland had a long career with Dan River, Inc. for 14 years in which he served in a number of capacities, including Executive Vice President for Manufacturing and Member, Board of Directors, Executive Vice President, Vice President and Manager of the Finishing Division. He also served as Executive Vice President, Manufacturing for C.M. Offray & Sons for four years, and as president of Textile Engineering Consultants, LTD. Sutherland has an equally distinguished history of service to the community, serving on the boards of directors of numerous community organizations. He is also a former member and chair of the Danville Community College Board.

Frederick J. “Derick” Vicks, II of Ringgold has been named Assistant Professor of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. He comes to DCC with 12 years of experience in the heating and air conditioning field. He earned his Diploma in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration from Danville Community College in 1995, and a Certificate of Completion from Service Experts Technical School in 1999. Prior to working at DCC, Vicks worked as a Service Technician at several companies such as Performance Heating and Air Conditioning, Davis Heating and Air Conditioning, Woods Heating and Air Conditioning, Roman Eagle Memorial Home, and Bryant’s Heating and Air Conditioning.

Linda N. Wilborne of South Boston, has been employed as Assistant Professor of Business Management. She received her Associate of Applied Science Degrees in Business Management and in Marketing from Danville Community College. She earned her Bachelor of Business Administration and Master’s of Business Administration degrees from Averett University. Wilborne also holds a Real Estate Sales Agent Provisional Broker’s License. She has also served as an adjunct instructor at DCC, and in 2004 received the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award. Prior to coming to the college, Wilborne was employed for 11 years with Rochester Button Company in South Boston.  She volunteers with several community organizations, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Danville Parks and Recreation, and English as a second language programs.

Christy Denise Yaple of Martinsville has been named Director of Tech Prep and Career Placement. Yaple earned an Associate of Arts and Science Degree in Business Administration from Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC). She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and a Master of Science Degree in Occupational and Technical Studies from Old Dominion University (ODU). She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Education, with a focus in Occupational and Technical Studies, from ODU. Previously, she was employed by PHCC for eight years in three capacities, as an Instructional Career Specialist, Middle School Outreach Specialist, and Tech Prep Administrative Assistant. In addition, Yaple is the Youth Group Director at Southside Baptist Church in Ridgeway.
