Summer Camps Aim To Prepare Girls For Leadership, Careers In Science

DANVILLE, VA, June 1, 2015 – Two summer camps at Danville Community College (DCC) are designed to empower girls to become the future leaders, scientists and engineers of the Dan River Region. Both camps, “Women Represented? and “Girl Powered 2,? are offered free, and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“Women Represented? is open to rising 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th-grade girls. The camp is set for June 8-12, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., in Room 113 of Foundation Hall on the DCC main campus. Campers will hear from female leaders in the region in the areas of industry, education and technology. The students also will learn about local resources to make their dreams of becoming leaders a reality.

“Girl Powered 2? is open to rising 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th-grade girls. The camp is set for June 15-19, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in Room 113 of Foundation Hall on the DCC main campus. The camp will provide girls with hands-on learning opportunities in science and engineering and teach them how to apply those skills in scientific careers. Rockets will fly. Buildings will crash. Genes will be spliced. This is a continuation from the successful camp held in 2014.

The DCC-sponsored summer camps are available to girls in the Dan River Region as a result of funding through the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. Field trips and tours of the DCC campus will be part of the girls’ summer camp experiences. Snacks will be provided to campers, as well.

For more information, or to register for one of the summer camps, contact Kirstin Pantazis, Camp Coordinator.
