DANVILLE, VA, June 30, 2015 – Explore career options, learn, have fun, and get enrolled in training at the Gene Haas Center For Integrated Machining Open House, set for Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by Danville Community College (DCC) and the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR). It offers opportunities to learn about careers in advanced manufacturing, such as DCC’s new integrated machining and dimensional inspection training, industrial maintenance, flow cell technology, precision machining, welding, and other DCC programs. The Gene Haas Center is located at 230 Slayton Avenue, in the Charles Hawkins Building at the IALR.

“This is the first time for an Open House of this type that brings all of our advanced manufacturing training in one place,? says Troy Simpson, DCC’s Director of Advanced Manufacturing. “We have a lot of new, short-term training, as well as our other degree, diploma and certificate programs. Just think…in a year or less, you could get the training you need for an entry-level job earning $17 or $18 to $25 per hour.?

Participants will tour the newly opened Gene Haas Center, which contains more than $2 million worth of equipment in a simulated manufacturing environment that is clean, well lit, and climate controlled. In addition, welding simulators, information technology certification training opportunities, information about upcoming free and discount tuition exploratory courses, and live demonstrations of 5-axis Haas Computer Numerical Control machines producing complex parts and advanced inspection equipment such as coordinate measuring machines will be on display.

Local and regional industry representatives will be on hand to discuss career options with their companies, Simpson says. “This is an opportunity to get firsthand information on the types of jobs available and the skills required to land these high paying careers in high demand fields. In particular, women who have successful careers in manufacturing will be available to share their stories and encourage other women to pursue similar career paths.?

College personnel will be on site to guide participants in applying for admission and financial aid to get started in the process of enrolling in programs. For example, participants can find out how to reserve their spot in the first integrated machining technology or dimensional inspection cohort. Both of the training programs are industry based. The integrated machining technology training model is the first of its kind in the United States, and is designed to equip students with the technical, leadership, and team communication skills sought by CEO’s of advanced manufacturing companies, in a live production environment. Classes start Aug. 24.

Graduates of DCC also will be available to share their success stories with Open House participants. Find out how you can achieve your career and educational goals, as well. Recent high school graduates, displaced workers, veterans, and residents of the region interested in increasing their earning potential or starting a new career all are encouraged to attend. To be eligible for admission to DCC, you must be at least 18 years old, and have either a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Degree (GED).

The event will allow participants the opportunity to see how complex aerospace, energy, and race car parts are manufactured and inspected. Hot dogs and drinks will be available to the first 100 attendees.
