DCC Among Military Advanced Education’s "Top Colleges and Universities"

DDANVILLE, VA, February 24, 2015 – Danville Community College is among the 2015 list of “Top Colleges and Universities? selected by Military Advanced Education. The list, published recently on its website and in the magazine, represents best practices in military/veteran education in the nation’s colleges and universities.

The higher education institutions included in Military Advanced Education’s guide were evaluated in six categories: military culture, financial assistance, flexibility, general support, online support, and on-campus support. DCC received the highest ratings in military culture and flexibility. The College maintains its strong military culture by offering a number of events and activities for veterans on campus, including a Veterans Day ceremony and a Student Veterans Organization.

DCC offers flexibility to veteran and military students by awarding experiential credit (college credit or advanced academic standing) to students with previous educational study or training/work experience applicable to their program of study, and providing for tuition relief, refund, and reinstatement of military students when military service requires their sudden withdrawal or prolonged absence from academic enrollment.

DCC has a veterans’ services plan consisting of five key components:
• Recruitment and retention – The College ensures consistent and sustained support from campus leadership by active involvement in veterans’ events.
• Registration – DCC follows the required steps for all veterans – new and transfer students – to apply their Veteran’s Administration educational benefits.
• Prior credit awards – DCC evaluates each veteran’s academic record on a case-by-case basis to ensure that he or she receives the maximum credit allowable under Virginia Community College System policies.
• Student Veterans Organization – The Student Veterans Organization, a chapter of the Student Veterans of America, is being reactivated. The organization enables veterans to have a voice on campus and provides a forum for veterans to socialize and assist one another in adjusting to college life.
• Veterans’ resources – DCC collaborates with local communities, veterans’ organizations and government agencies to coordinate services for veterans.
