The women’s volleyball team at Danville Community College is preparing for its inaugural season. Shown, left to right, are: (first row) Dakota Walton, Maddie Jackson and Sydney Shelton; (second row) Brittany Brumfield, Allison Womack, Amber Marion and Brittany Vasser; and (third row) Assistant Coach Megan Dillion, Baleigh Hicks, Courtney East, Lindsey Vasser and Head Coach Jerusha Kazmier. All Home games will be played at the Danville Family YMCA.

DANVILLE, VA, August 11, 2015 – Solidarity and defense are the strengths that coaches say will make Danville Community College’s new women’s volleyball team a success. Head Coach Jerusha Mann Kazmier and Assistant Coach Megan Dillion are watching the team unify as they prepare for their first set of games on Aug. 15 at Patrick Henry Community College: a match against Walters State Community College (Tenn.) at 2:30 p.m., and a match against Cape Fear Community College (N.C.) at 4:00 p.m.

“I can see the team members starting to leave behind their old identities, melding as a team, and taking on the new identity as the DCC Lady Knights,? Kazmier says. “Going into our first match of the season, if we can solidify and gel as a team unit and take on that new identity, we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with.?

Kazmier and Dillion, both former Tunstall High School volleyball players, have a lineup of stellar players, many of whom played volleyball in the area high schools. The players are: Allison Womack and Brittany Brumfield, former Tunstall High School players, Courtney East, a former Chatham High School player, Sydney Shelton, Lindsey Vasser and Brittany Vasser, former Gretna High School players, Maddie Jackson, a former Halifax County High School player, Baleigh Hicks, a former Chatham Hall player, Dakota Walton and Amber Marion.

“I’ve got a great group of girls who are very excited and ready to go. They have heart, talent and commitment. They have been working hard from day one,? Kazmier says. “All are very strong defensive players. Having a strong defensive team will allow us to run a more strategic offense.?
Two of the team’s players – Allison Womack and Brittany Brumfield – have years of practice together on the volleyball court. The friends started playing volleyball together in middle school and went on to play for the Tunstall High School volleyball team until their 2014 graduation. Womack and Brumfield were thrilled to learn that DCC was starting a women’s volleyball team, and that they would have the opportunity to be teammates once again.

“We have experience working with each other on the court,? Brumfield says. “If she and I are on the back row and the ball is in the middle of us, we know which one of us is going to get it without thinking twice.?

The team will play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X, Division III. Teams in the division include Patrick Henry and Wytheville Community Colleges in Virginia, and Central Carolina, Davidson, Lenoir, Rockingham, Sandhills, Surry, Vance Granville and Wake Tech Community Colleges in North Carolina. Dillion and Kazmier both say they are excited to start the season, and make history with their team of players.

“We will be the first women’s volleyball team at the junior college level here in Danville,? Kazmier says. “I think any time you have an inaugural team, it’s a special thing.?
