Building Trades Students

Danville Community College Building Trades students Darnell Averett, Tyler High, and Betty Walton-Furman complete a project while Instructor Del Pool observes their work.

DANVILLE, VA, September 23, 2014 – Danville Community College Building Trades students recently completed a project for the Stratford Tennis Club. As a part of their BLD 195 On-Site Training class, they built four 4’x8’ shelters at the tennis courts. Each shelter was an A-roof supported by 6’ X 6’ treated posts with metal covering the roof and vinyl siding on the gable ends. The students worked on this project during class time for about six weeks. The class meets two days a week for seven hours a day.

According to Del Pool, Instructor of Building Trades, the students regularly perform hands-on projects like this one because it gives the students excellent on-the-job training.

“Whenever the students work on these projects, all the materials are supplied and the students provide the labor,? Pool said. “Students have also framed a house for Habitat For Humanity.?

He noted the students who worked on the Stratford Tennis Club project included: Darnell Averett, Lamont Clauden, Tyler High, Nick Pluto, Micah Thomas and Betty Walton-Furman.

Building Trades is a Certificate program that can be completed in one year of full-time study. The program is designed to help entry-level employees in construction-related trades obtain job-specific knowledge and skills to improve their work performance and career status within the construction industry.

“The students prefer the hands-on work rather than sitting in a classroom. They learn more about carpentry by actually completing projects,? Pool added.
