RICHMOND, VA, April 16, 2014 – LifePoint/Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) has earned the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. LifePoint/Danville Regional Medical Center was nominated for the award by the Danville Community College Educational Foundation. Representing LifePoint/Danville Regional Medical Center was Eric Deaton, CEO of DRMC. The award was given recently during a luncheon ceremony at the Country Club of Virginia.

LifePoint/DRMC has invested significantly with the DCC Educational Foundation and Danville Community College to establish the DRMC Scholar Award for aspiring students in the nursing program at DCC. This investment, which totals $500,000 provides “turn-key? financial access to nursing students who submit an application for review, screening and approval by college and hospital nursing staff. This includes funding for tuition, books, fees, supplies, and their NCLEX review course. The full investment by DRMC equates to $6,000 per student. These students, upon graduation and state licensure requirements, have the opportunity to seek full employment at DRMC and/or adjoining LifePoint facilities within the region.

“This investment came at the most critical time for our student nursing community. For those worthy nursing students to have an opportunity at a nursing scholarship and employment upon graduation and passing their state boards, demonstrates the strong commitment DRMC has made to DCC, the region and to our communities overall healthcare. We are blessed to have DRMC in our community as our healthcare provider,? explains Shannon Hair, Executive Director of the Danville Community College Educational Foundation and member of the DRMC Board of Trustee.

The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy luncheon is hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) to honor the leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges as well as the statewide foundation. This marks the ninth year the awards have been given.

This year’s class of distinguished philanthropy leaders has contributed a combined total of more than $12 million dollars to Virginia’s Community Colleges.

In keynote remarks, Virginia Business Higher Education Council Chair W. Heywood Fralin said, “Many believe, including myself, that the community college will be the centerpiece of economic development in each region of the commonwealth for the next several decades…..All philanthropists are interested in their local communities, and I would argue that in today’s world, the local community college should be considered a top priority for philanthropic dollars. Where it happens, regions will thrive, and where it doesn’t, they will struggle.?

VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois noted that the generosity of the two dozen philanthropy leaders makes a critical difference in the lives of students and their families as well as in the economic vitality of the commonwealth.

“They believe in the knowledge and skills that Virginia’s Community Colleges offer to every Virginian. We thank them deeply for the partnerships that demonstrate the art of giving,? DuBois added.
