DANVILLE, DANVILLE, VA October 17, 2013 - Two Danville Community College student teams took home several top prizes in Danville’s Cardboard Challenge: Celebrating the Imagination, held recently at the Carrington Pavilion, and sponsored by the Danville Regional Foundation. Teams, composed of community, college and school groups, competed in 13 categories.

First -year students in DCC’s Drafting and General Engineering programs captured the “Best in Show? award with a replica of the Fred Flintstone family car. The sturdy car made entirely of cardboard, assorted tapes and plastics, measured 6 ½ ft x 4 ½ ft x 5 ft. Student Jody Bussell said they chose the idea for the car because they wanted it to provide an opportunity for children to actually ride in the vehicle. In addition to Bussell, others working on the project were Nick Reynolds, Nourhan Farag, Lawrence Hampton, Connor Midkiff and Trey Yarbrough. The DCC team received a $2,500 award for their efforts, which was donated to Habitat for Humanity. A seven-year old received the keys to his very own car, and the Fred and Barney cut outs were donated to Families First Children’s Center on the DCC campus.

The other winning DCC team was composed of Amber Poole and Denisha Saunders, both students in David Shivetts’ Sculpture I class. Their idea was to build a boat as it “winds through the trees near Dan River Mills.? The pair took home two awards - “Best River Theme?, with a $1,000 prize and “Most Functional?, with a $1,500 prize. The students’ prize money totaled $2,500 and was donated to the Danville Cancer Association.
