DANVILLE, VA, December 5, 2013 – Danville Community College students will benefit from a major gift from the J. T. – Minnie Maude Charitable Trust, which recently made a $100,000 contribution to the DCC Educational Foundation. The funds ($50,000 each) will be used to enhance the College’s tutoring services and provide for the purchase of an electric discharge machining (EDM) system to support advanced manufacturing, as well as the precision machining technology programs.

DCC's Tutoring Center is nationally certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. Free tutoring is currently offered throughout the academic year to currently enrolled students in individual and group settings for most classes. In addition to providing tutoring, the grant funds will used for students to pursue valuable certifications and provide additional professional development opportunities.

The Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is a manufacturing process whereby a desired shape is obtained using electrical discharges (sparks). EDM represents one of the most promising up-and-coming technologies in the advanced manufacturing, with many of the larger industries, using this technology for their shop floors. DCC will be the only college in Virginia with the EDM, thus giving DCC students a competitive advantage when competing for advanced manufacturing jobs.
