DANVILLE, VA., May 11, 2012 – More than 600 certificates, diplomas and associate degrees were handed out at Danville Community College’s 2012 Commencement, held at the main campus in Danville. This year’s ceremony also featured a tribute to military personnel, and the awarding of two honorary degrees to area citizens.

Rear Admiral Robert Fountain (USN, Ret.) of Montrose was the guest speaker. Fountain is a member of the State Board for Community Colleges. In addition, Honorary Associate in Humane Letters Degrees were awarded to Dr. B.R. Ashby Jr., and Danville businessman Frank W. Mobley Jr. The two were recognized for their contributions to higher education, the region’s workforce services, and especially to Danville Community College. Scholarship recipients who are continuing their education at four-year institutions were also recognized during the ceremony.

David Bonebright, Professor of Marketing, was honored with the Student Government Association's (SGA) Teacher of the Year Award, presented by William Anthony Thompson of Danville, SGA President. Bonebright was cited for his dedication, concern for students and professionalism. In his nomination letter, a student described him as being “firm and disciplined, but fair and makes students think outside the box. He goes out of his way to make students understand the material.?

The Stephanie L. Ferguson Medallion of Courage was presented to Lisa Ann Wolfe of Danville. Wolfe, who has a hearing loss in both ears, came to DCC in 2005 after being displaced from her job when Corning, Inc., closed its Danville plant. During this time, she has continued to demonstrate the highest level of commitment and dedication to completing her college education. She has consistently been named to the Vice President’s and President’s Honors Lists, and memberships in two honor societies – Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Beta Gamma. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Management. She attributes her accomplishments first to her faith in God and second to the support of her parents. The Ferguson Medallion of Courage is presented in memory of a DCC student who died in April 1990.

Christopher Carter of Danville was recognized for his selection in the 2012 All-Virginia Academic Team competition, sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and USA Today. Carter graduated Summa Cum Laude with an Associate of Arts and Science Degree in Liberal Arts.

The certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees in 54 different program areas were conferred upon graduates by DCC President Dr. Carlyle Ramsey and Dr. Chris Ezell, Vice President, Academic and Student Services.
